Police Detective Jessica Shephard becomes embroiled in a darkly personal hunt for a serial killer in this psychological thriller.

Radio Times

Ashley Judd chalks up another addition to her tortured female canon in this monotonous thriller from Quills director Philip Kaufman. Joined by Andy Garcia as her cop partner, she plays a newly promoted police inspector hunting for a serial killer who's murdering her casual lovers. While colleagues quickly point the finger at Judd, much to the consternation of her mentor and commissioner, Samuel L Jackson, Kaufman is more indiscriminate with his accusations. Throwaway dialogue, constant close-ups and stalker-style tracking shots set up almost every character as a suspect without any concrete reason. There are so many red herrings and so little real action that it all becomes tiresome, especially when Judd's contribution is a repeated cycle of drinking, passing out and waking up to discover another corpse has turned up. Though hers is a role normally filled by a man, like the rest of the core cast she's suffocated by the overall weakness of the plot and script. With no suspense or credibility, there's nothing to save this wasteful mess.

Watchable

Melanie Thompson from Leicester, 13th October, 2004

I have to admit that I had never heard of this film when I saw it as a new release. Sporting a decent cast, and being one of my favourite genres (thriller), it was a definite must see for me. Unfortunately it wasn't as good as I had hoped. It's watchable, but had nothing that hasn't already been done to death in films before. There was no real suspense and I found it all rather predictable, including the ending. After watching it I understood why I hadn't heard of it before, as I can't imagine that it was a big hit.

What Do They Call Trousers in America???

Raj from Croydon, 28th June, 2005

This should have been one of those late night films you watch on tv when you can't get to sleep. If it was I would have given it 2 stars instead of 1 but this has to be a 0 for effort movie. Samuel L. Jackson decided some years ago that he's now made his name and his money so why bother choosing good roles anymore. Once again he plays a familiar and wasted role while Andy Garcia seems to have sunk to an all time low as a totally pointless supporting actor. A complete waste of time in my opinion.

Twisting & Turning

annie58 from hampshire, 3rd November, 2004

This is a very good thriller, with twists & turns until the end. Keeps you guessing the whole way. Good plot with sound acting all round, especially Ashley Judd.

Interesting cover on the date rape drug. Would recommend highly if you like this sort of film!

Watchable movie

A Customer from hertfordshire, england, 16th October, 2004

Good star cast in it but a very predictable film. Was not full of suspense or edge of the seat stuff as specified in the information about the film. A bit disappointing. Although watchable.

Well I never guessed who done it.... it has a well used theme, but the title says it all - the lead police woman definately likes her wine and you get led in to thinking she is either being stalked or has a dual personality, however you suddenly are thrown a new suspect and it all fits, but the title then comes into force again 'cos there's another twist right at the end.....enjoy.

TWISTED

I have seen this movie about three times now and it never ceases to entertain me. It will have you guessing, wondering and feeling sure you know who is the culprit. You will be surprised I assure you.

Don't waste your time

Peter Galley from Cambridge, 31st December, 2007

When you start out to make a movie with a storyline thats been done more often than a 40 year old porn star, there are a few things you should consider trying... Plot-twists are a good start... this has all the twists of a beach front pier, an ending so obvious, you couldn't have seen it coming better if it was covered in christmas lights... Charactor Developement... Ok, we don't need dental records, or their family tree, but knowing a little about the fringe cast would help understand them, and as for the lead cast, learning all about them in the first 10 mins isn't always a good idea, keep them interesting! Realistic casting... i have always struggled with the idea of certain actors in certain roles, and this is a prime example, i mean Ashley Judd as an alcoholic cop? Come on! im not saying she's not a good actress, but what could she possibly be driven to drink about? She is staggeringly attractive, sexy, smart, how are we supposed to belive a women like that could be so deppressed? Either a better actress, or a less good looking one! As for the rest of the cast, Andy Garcia gave what i think is probably his worst performance ever, (and thats saying something)... Judd came across as a bit to pathetic, and distant, i wanted, as i'm sure many others did, to feel sorry for her but i just couldn't... and wanting to seem macho, just doesn't work when you're that good looking... Sam Jackson is one of the finest actors today, and can do almost anything, but even he couldn't lift this badly written, badly planned, train wreck of a movie, that just seemed to be rushed through production... really, a couple of 2nd or 3rd takes could have made this so much better!
