This story is based on the legend of the "Werewolf of Allariz". A traveling vendor rolls through the forest in his old wagon. Whilst on his route he has women faithfully waiting for him at every village. He's intelligent and attractive, but also a monster feared by all. The film is based on the true-life story of Manuel Blanco Romasanta, the traveling vendor, who confessed to the murders of thirteen people, using their body fat to make soap. Romasanta was tried in Allariz in 1852 and proclaimed he was a werewolf.

Worth a watch - based on a true story !

A Customer from north east, 24th February, 2005

This is not a werewolf/horror film.It is based on a true story of a man manuel romasanta who in the 1850's admitted to killing 15 people. He claimed to be a wolf man. It's different and worth a watch.I enjoyed it, the acting is good.Quite spooky to think it's based on a true story.

How refreshing!

Vampire from Staffs, 12th November, 2004

What a refreshing change to watch a film that didn't assume the viewer was a typical teenager content with generic slasher stalker trash. This beautifully shot and directed film, reminded me of an era gone by when quality and presentation was appreciated.

Based on a legend, this story did not only focus on the gruesome events but also tried to give the viewer an insight into the relationships the main character was trying to forge as well as the reasoning behind his behaviour. Julian Sands was as ever pleasant on the eye and perfectly suited to a character who was supposed to be able to detach his emotions from the stark reality of behaviour he felt was beyond his control.

A real gem of a film for anyone wanting a couple of hours of interesting storyline line and gorgeous location filming all wrapped up into a Grimms fairytale style oldfashioned tale of horrific proportions.

Different

Rustyfilms from , 19th February, 2010

I don't know why the average rating for this film is 'just ok', I rented this film as it was based on true events and with the synopsis, I thought it would be interesting, it certainly was. Not only was it that, it was also a good film, they obviously did their research, and did a good job of the film, also, everyone was good, no bad acting. I am a horror freak, but there is one particular bit that made ne cringe. It also makes you wonder.

not bad, but not really a werewolf movie

Daysi from , 17th February, 2009

it reminded me me of a cross between 'Perfume' and 'Brotherhood of the Wolf' but with less action, less humour and wooden acting. it wasn't necessarily a bad movie, but it certainly wasn't what i had been expecting, more of a recount of a true story as opposed to the usual werewolf movie.

Different but not that remarkable

Screen Queen from Woking, Surrey, 30th November, 2005

Julian Sands is one of those handsome actors I thought would have been a megastar by now, but his lack of any erotic or sexual frisson on screen has probably worked against him (he kisses like a scared schoolboy). He plays Manuel Romasanta, a serial killer who purported to be a werewolf. Romasanta worked as a travelling saleman and wooed hapless women before he killed them, all based in 19th century Galicia in northern Spain. Julian, however, does do the weird/crazed thing really well. Many of the other actors were extremely good and give substance to a film that I was expecting to fall flat at certain points. One thing thing I found it incredible is that a young woman such as the main protagonist would be living alone in a large house without a bunch of village busybodies trying to marry her off or otherwise interfering in her life - this is the 19th century after all. But maybe that's just me. Basically a love gone bad/revenge plot horror film with some (though few) exciting moments. A pleasant though unremarkable viewing experience.
