Breaking from his signature slacker-underdog films like CLERKS, MALLRATS, and CHASING AMY, Kevin Smith delivers the feel-good family movie JERSEY GIRL. While Smith's pert one-liners and wryly ironic sense of humour are clearly present in the script, his casting choices (Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck) and glossy aesthetic identify the film as a mainstream Hollywood crowd-pleaser. Affleck stars as Ollie, a powerful entertainment executive with a perfect wife (Lopez) and a beautiful Manhattan apartment. But when his wife dies in childbirth and his career fizzles to a halt, he humbly gives up his fast-paced Manhattan lifestyle for the benefit of his daughter Gurtie (Raquel Castro), who is 7 years old for the majority of the film. He moves to New Jersey to live with his father (George Carlin), finds a new romantic interest (Liv Tyler), and learns some lessons about what's important in life. A subplot about Will Smith keeps a string of Hollywood insider jokes and quick cameos (Matt Damon) running throughout the film, while a school play modeled after "Sweeney Todd" lends itself to some funny theatrical moments. An emotive pop soundtrack features music by Aimee Mann in addition to a handful of well-timed entries that help move the plot along ("Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" plays as Ollie sheepishly drives across the river from Manhattan to Jersey), rounding out JERSEY GIRL as a likeable comedy. Parents beware, Smith may have curbed his edginess for this one, but foul language abounds.

Don't like chick flicks

Mark Underwood from Cheltenham, England., 13th December, 2004

I don't normally like chick flicks, which I suppose this movie would be classed as. But this was a very well made and moving movie. There aren't many movies out there really worth watching, but this one is.

Fits like a jersey

rentboyJu from Suffolk, 4th November, 2004

This film was ripped apart on it's release because of the almost global Bennifer bashing that was taking place. Did it derserve it? In truth, absolutely not.

This is a well acted, emotional and heart warming film. If those descriptive words scare you off it's because you don't like this sort of film. If you do like this sort of film, it's one of the better ones. Ben Affleck deserves some long needed recognition for his acting here. Excellent.

Better than expected

A Customer from Surrey, 3rd December, 2004

I was expecting nothing but bad things from this movie as it was gutted in the press and by cinema goers. I am pleased to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I think that the story line was lovely and the acting from all leads was heartfelt and enjoyable. (I am glad that the annoying J-Lo is confined to opening few scenes!) I would recommend this to all people who like a 'feel good' movie which is easy to watch with a good storyline.

Jersey Cream!

Rosster from , 10th February, 2010

This was a lovely wee film! A bit schmaltzy, perhaps, but the lead players are all good, including the young girl who plays Ben Affleck's character's daughter. She is very fetching! All in all, delightful and well worth its relatively short watching time.

It's been done better before...

Charlesworth from , 7th March, 2009

I heard that this film was bad, but as I am a big Kevin Smith fan I thought I ought to rent it. I put every bad review out of my head to give it the benefit of the doubt. And ok, it's a nice story, the little girl in it is awesome BUT has no one else realised that this is just basically a poor man's 'Jack and Sarah'? Ten minutes in I was like....this story is famaliair...NO WAY!! IF you want a heart warming tale that will stay with you long after you watch it then watch 'Jack and Sarah', if you want an awesome Kevin Smith film rent 'Clerks'. Jersey Girl ain't bad...it's just been done a million times better about ten years before it was made.

Not as bad as you might think.

A Customer from Durham, 1st December, 2008

I actually quite enjoyed this film. I was ready to hate it. What was there to like after all it was a Kevin Smith film with no Jay and Silent Bob but including the terrible Ben Affleck. I can't stand Ben Affleck I think his acting is generally wooden. However Kevin Smith seems to be able to get the best out of him. This film was entertaining and funny. Liv Tyler was brilliant however it was Raquel Castro as little Gurtie who really stole the show. My favourite bit is when the family perform Sweeney Todd for the school play.
