Radio Times

Director Anthony Minghella followed his award-winning The English Patient with this absorbing thriller, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. Matt Damon plays Ripley, a young opportunist who seeks out Dickie Greenleaf (Oscar-nominated Jude Law), an American playboy living it up in Europe. Ripley becomes friends with Dickie, but gradually comes to covet the carefree lifestyle he shares with his glamorous girlfriend (Gwyneth Paltrow). Minghella's classy direction and the superior cast make this never less than compelling.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Glamorous thriller of class warfare and homosexual obsession, often engrossing but much too long.

You'll either love it or hate it.

A Customer from Romney Marsh, 2nd June, 2004

I'm a fan of Matt Damon and Jude Law so this looked like an great combination for a movie. It tells the story of a young man (Damon) who pretends to be an old friend of the son of a wealthy American living in europe (Law). He fools all into buying his scam and starts enjoying a life with all the benefits of a wealthy, carefree friend.

But things start to go a little too far, and how far will he go to preserve this fake existence?

So, the plot sounds interesting enough. But somehow, to me, the plot just seems a little too slow, and the characters just not quite believable. This may leave you not really caring what happens to who, or trying to figure out the plot instead of enjoying the movie.

Overall, it wasn't my cup of tea. It has the ingredients of a quality movie, it's just that they're not quite mixed to my tastes, so others may enjoy the plot and pace more than I.

I could watch movies like this all the time. The story is a good adaptation for the Patricia
Highsmith book. The characters are well developed and while faithfulness to the book is not
entirely necessary in a movie, the point would be lost here if the story was Hollywoodised. I
would have preferred that Jude Law play Ripley instead of the rather wooden Matt Damon.
Gwyneth Paltrow is, as usual, delicious.

Refreshingly good

Benedicth from , 29th March, 2005

A reasonably plausible plot, major consequences stemming from a small lie, with an excellent cast.

Thoroughly enjoyable stylish thriller, with good photography and locations.

Talented

CJH from , 17th October, 2009

Quite an odd film, Matt Damon plays a man who seems very normal, verging on 'boring', but has a talent for lying and deception. When he decides to use his skills to live two lives, his own and that of his wealthy friend, he finds himself deep within a web of lies and deceit. The film starts off very slowly; building up all of the characters and slowly showing Ripley's normalness backfire on him, before everything goes wrong. Was very slow starting, but the moment when everything backflips on itself is tense and dramatic.

Creepy or was that Mr Law?

Amsterdam58 from from Hull, 3rd August, 2009

As much as I admire Matt Damon's versatile performance in this movie, I have to admit the whole thing creeped me out. Or maybe it was just Jude Law!

Excellent plot

A Customer from Saffron Walden, 16th May, 2009

Great characters, good cast, plausible. Very good film, recommended. If you like an intriguing story and one that does not rely on CGI for substance, then you will like this.
