Steven Price (a very hammy Rush) is a wealthy amusement park owner who invites several strangers to his shrewish wife's birthday party, this year held in the abandoned Vannacutt Institute for the Mentally Insane. There, he offers a prize of one million dollars to each party-goer who can spend the entire night in the creepy and cavernous building. As Mr. and Mrs. Price play a bitter game of cat and mouse, the guests begin to think there are more ominous forces at work, especially after the body count begins to creep higher and higher. A remake of the 1958 low-budgeter starring Vincent Price.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Supernatural horror that is heavy on shocks and special effects, but otherwise offers little that is special, though Rush's Vincent Price impersonation provides a little fun.

so bad...

A Customer from London, 25th October, 2008

This was so crap bu so crap that I have no idea why I rented this movie. It started ok but then it lost then plot. Freak weird stuff so please avoid this if you have a brain. Poorly acted and strange plot so not sure what's the fuss was about. Not even worth 0 stars this should be subzero.

House on Haunted Hill

Rather silly story with full quota of blood and guts being spilled from predictable characters. Surprised Geoffry Rush decided to appear in this teen appeal rubbish. Has done nothing to further his career. Have to admit though, a few scenes did have a spine shivering quality and the sound track was also quite disturbing - on a quality stereo TV it was quite spooky to be able to hear lots of whisperings, moanings, creakings etc beneath the actual dialogue - most unsettling.

Bit on the corny side but entertaining. The eye candy makes for half a star, lol.

Couldn't even finish it

A Customer from Pontyclun, 4th November, 2009

Horror films are usually either good and scary or bad and funny. This was just awful and not funny, really don't bother. No likable characters, and no good deaths.

Nothing special but entertaining

yet another remake. The original was alright, hard to foolw but good enough. The remake, however, is a mixed bag. It's first half hour is quite tidious. The build up really is a bit bored and slippily done as far as setting the scene for the story goes. Once they finally get into the house things only get a bit better. It's not boring but it is still tidious none the less. Theres rather a lot of flash frame lighting which is horrible to watch for too long. The film rather relies on it a bit. The houses atmosphere is very fake compared to the original. In the original you felt like the people were in an old house. In this remake it looks like a reconstruction of a house. Not real looking at all. The main charactors aren't as convincing as the old cast of the original. The whole thing's a bit lame compared to the originial. However, if you've not seen this film before, you'll enjoy it. If you hate black and white old films, you'll love this remake. Sure, it got my watching til the end. Some scenes were quite good and besides recking the original story about, the new improved version could have been a lot worse. I was happy to watch it but, the orignial, which isn't much in itself, is a better than the remake.
