A female nurse, Anna, and a black police officer, Kenneth, are caught in the middle of world-wide chaos as flesh-eating zombies begin to take over the world by attacking the living...

Halliwell's Film Guide

A more expensive remake of George A. Romero's horror movie that is just another example of Hollywood consuming its past for no good reason; there's no life in these zombies even though they can move at speed.

Is this anything to do with the original?

Unsound Methods from Spalding, Lincolnshire, 30th July, 2004

Well, it's called Dawn of the Dead and there's a shopping mall in it but that where the simularity between this and the 1978 original stop!

This is a good film! there's no doubt about that but what got me the most is that i've been watching Zombie films for years and they just do not run! they kind of wibble along like pensioners after a heavy nights drinking session on 'Wicked strength' lager! BUT!!!! in this new D.O.T.D. the run about.. NO! sprint about looking for a nice chewy victim! Thats my only gripe!

Watch this film, don't take it too seriously and you'll enjoy it! there's some good ideas in here; armour plated buses with 'oops!' mind that chainsaw! and 'Sniping the stars' from the rooftop! It's all good!

If you haven't seen the original then do so as it's good to compare!

The perils of censorship!

Johnwriter from Tyne and Wear, 3rd January, 2005

I like zombie films. Always have done. But whilst this movie is very good it isn't good enough.

That isn't the fault of the actors, or the director, or the special effects.

It's down to the censor who, in the UK version I watched, has chopped 4 minutes and 55 seconds off the original run-time.

Now, 4 minutes and 55 seconds may not be a long time when there's dialogue, BUT YOU TRY HANGING UPSIDE DOWN FOR THAT LENTH OF TIME!

And you must remember, those 4 minutes and 55 seconds were probably all action. I know from my American friends that a sex scene was cut. It wasn't particularly "hot" but hell fire we're adults, and I am assured it was nothing pornograhic! But it was apparently pivotal to establishing a bond between two characters that is not in this version.

And to add insult to injury, there is another version going around outside the UK which runs at 1 hour 49 minutes!

That's nearly 14 minutes MORE than in the British version, which only runs at 1 hour 35 minutes plus a few seconds!

Because of that I give this film a "2". Without the cuts I'd probably give it 7 out of 7. I just don't like being treated like a kid, as if I am not "mature" enough to see a completed film!

The greatest, most unique zombie film of all time

Martyn Standering from Sheffield, England, 10th April, 2005

Wow, what a film. I can honestly say that i have never watched a film as many times as this one!Firstly, the acting is to a reasnable standard, the plot is the usual (zombies taking over the world), and the location (the shopping mall) is effective and works well. The zombies are simply terrifying due to them being able to run ! This also makes the film like no other typical zombie film apart from '28 Days later'. They also look very frightening and realistic, unlike the ones from the original (clown lookalikes with face paint on) The director, Zack Snyder has created an effective sense of isolation in the film. All the time mayhem and panic is displayed on screen, as well as the desperation of surviovrs running away. There is also a cameo appearence from Peter (The cop in the original 'Dawn Of The Dead').It is definately worth a watch, I haven't spoken to anyone who has not at least thought it was 'ok'.

Non-stop, in your face Zombie action - with not a lot left to the imagination!

benspencer from from Loughborough, 10th March, 2005

Now first of all I have not seen that many Zombie films in my time so I can't really compare this film to anything else. But what I would say is that it's easy to watch (if you don't mind vast amounts of blood!) and it's pretty good fun. It certainly never bores - the zombie action starts within the first 5-10 minutes (although it's debatable whether that's a good thing or not I suppose). And not a lot is left to the imagination - it's non-stop, in your face zombie action! I would also say that this film benefits from not having any MASSIVE stars as it makes it just a little bit more believable - and the performances were good to match.

Not as bad as you'd expect

Duzzbob from , 9th November, 2009

Most remakes of classic films are an embarrassment but this remake of George Romero's classic isn't as bad as I expected. For one thing the film is very short and doesn't waste any time getting into the zombie action, and whilst that makes for an action packed thrill ride, you do miss the opportunity to get to know the main characters well enough to actually give a damn about them. Once again the zombies in this film are on speed, just like 28 Days Later and Resident Evil, which makes for more jumps and chases, but loses the creepiness of Romero's slow, cumbersome zombies. Not a bad way to spend 90 minutes if you aren't an obsessive Romero fan.

This review may upset zombie film lovers

m7cky from , 11th July, 2009

When this movie was first released I was more than a little sceptical. The original Dawn Of the Dead was (and still is) one of my all-time favourite movies and I was wary of Hollywood tearing it to shreds. My worries, as it turned out, were completely disproved. This version is nothing short of amazing. Gone are the stumbling, slow-witted zombies of the original, replaced by fast moving, foaming at the mouth, evil undead cannibals. The story is even improved, managing to drag you into the lives of every one of the characters portrayed. The pace is unrelenting, the zombies look genuine ( I assume, I haven't seen one in the flesh so to speak) & all the acting is superb. The soundtrack is also worth a mention, containing tunes from Johnny Cash amongst others. The addition of a zombie baby is a high point along with Andy's 'shoot the stars' game. Oh & watch the credits, the film isn't finished when the titles roll. My verdict, THE best zombie movie of all time. And that includes Romero's original. There. I said it.
