Tom Hanks portrays suburbanite Ray Peterson, whose plans for a peaceful vacation are disturbed by a creepy new family on the block, in this outrageous suspense-comedy directed by Joe Dante. To the disappointment of his wife Carol (Carrie Fisher), Ray decides to spend a relaxing week at home, and soon gets into trouble with his neighbours - a hefty busybody (Rick Ducommun), a freaked-out ex-soldier (Bruce Dern), and a spacey teenager (Corey Feldman) - as they observe the strange happenings next door at the Klopek's bizarre residence. When the neighbourhood grouch suddenly disappears, the men are convinced the ramshackle house hides some hideous clues. Armed with assault rifles, high-powered binoculars and a shovel, they decide to see for themselves exactly what is going on in the Klopek place. Set in an average neighbourhood that is anything but average, The 'Burbs blends slapstick comedy and spine-thrilling mystery with the type of witty humour that has made Tom Hanks one of today's most popular stars.

Hanks' best film!

Matthew O'Connor from Rutland, England, 22nd June, 2004

The 'Burbs must stand as one of the most underrated films of all time.

Every performance in this movie is pitch perfect and it features Hanks at his comedic best, just before he became Oscar worthy (and more than a little bland).

Look out also for Bruce Dern and Corey Feldman in a brilliant turn before he slipped into drug fuelled oblivion.

The director Joe Dante was also responsible for Gremlins, The Howling, Innerspace and another true lost classic The Explorers.

This, however is his masterpiece (however did he end up making Looney Tunes: Back In Action?!)

See this film now!

Great fun

Tom Hanks is one of my favourite actors and always leaves one in awe of his talents. Here he is joined by some fabulously funny and weird neighbours in 'the burbs' where he lives.

Great acting from Bruce Dern, veteran actor Gayle Gordon, Carrie Fisher as Tom's long suffering wife (an old cliche brought to life here) and Corey Feldman leaves a long lasting impression of his likeability.

Overstressed suburbanite Tom Hanks

A Customer from Lincoln, 4th December, 2008

This is a classic 80s film and must see for all fans of that wonderful decade when storylines where truly random. 'A comedy about a solitary serial killer family moving into a Middle-American suburb and their neighbours trying to catch them out?' Any director these days wouldn't look once at such a script. I first saw this film when I was about 12 and to be honest I remembered it all. The stereotypical characters; the annoying one, irritable one, military one, and the pleasant enough plot of adults acting like kids spying on their creepy neighbours is a good mix. Although the film has its moments I was left thinking that if this was a truly classic film you notice new things on the second or third watch. However The 'Burbs is as 2D and flat a film as you can get and you are left feeling that a film with Tom Hanks in deserved a little more. Did I mention that what's her name (Carrie Fisher) from Star Wars is in it too? Yet these sorts of eccentric movies to me will always hold a place in my childhood. Wacky idea and not poorly made. Fits in nicely as a light comedy movie for say a Sunday evening, but don’t expect anything more.

Weird and dated

A Customer from Sheffield, England, 2nd November, 2009

This film is weird and very dated. Not the Tom Hanks we know and love. Boring and not worth the watch. It's on the lines of Ghostbusters or The Adams Family genre, but even worse!
