A comedy about the inhabitants of Tulley More, a small Irish town with a population of fifty-two and dwindling. When Jackie and Michael discover that someone in their town has won the national lottery, they intend to uncover the lucky individual and talk him into sharing the jackpot with them. Trouble arises when they discover it's good old Ned Devine, and no longer is he one of the living. The citizens must band together and fool the authorities into believing that Ned is still alive, in order for them to receive the money and share it amongst themselves.

An utterly charming gem of a film from first-time director Kirk Jones, which was a surprise hit Stateside thanks to an imaginative marketing campaign. It's set on a tiny Irish island, where two old men become hysterical when they discover an anonymous local has won the lottery. Their attempts to uncover the lucky so-and-so involve bribery and much false nicety until success results in them orchestrating a complex lie that involves the entire community. Ian Bannen (who tragically died within a year of this career-reviving performance) and David Kelly play the avaricious OAPs in a tale that is both laugh-out-loud funny and extremely touching.

This DVD is great. Great light comedy, as the town of Tulley Mohr try to cash the lottery ticket of the dead winner in order to share the 7 million pounds (14$ million) wealth amongst all 52 who live in the town. Recommended, suitable for all ages.

slow lottery fun

tim smith from walsall, 31st August, 2005

Found the film slow but characteristically british. Wife and I swithed off bored and went back to it to see the best bits. A bottle of wine or a few pints of the black stuff and it would just about make it. Feasible especially with the little twist at the end. If it was a little faster or shorter I would add half a star. Sunday afternoon film.

And don't take it personally, Finn, but I bought you some expensive, fruity soaps.

The film is about an elderly gentleman who dies clutching his winning lottery ticket which he had signed on the reverse as Ned Kelly. This ensures that only Ned Kelly can claim the lottery millions and the whole village consort to deceive the Lottery Panel that Ned Kelly is alive and kicking. The twists and turns of the film are hilarious and the film makes really good family viewing. Shaun Davey provides the foot-tapping soundtrack that works wonderfully with the scenic surroundings (shot in the Isle Of Man). Waking Ned Devine is something rarely seen today ... a genuinely funny movie. But the humour stems not from overly clever screenwriting, comedy cliches or tired pratfalls. It's the result of an inventive storyline, excellent character development and filmmaking expertise that will make even the most cynical moviegoer laugh out loud. The cast are incredible, especially Ian Bannen as Jackie, and David Kelly as Michael. Micheal's motorcycle ride to Ned's house has to be one of the funniest scenes ever to grace the screen. This possibly rates as my 'Best film of the nineties' Truly a must-see film! Hollywood ... eat your heart out!
