Halliwell's Film Guide

Based on an actual trial and its sensational aftermath in 1958, this is a resolutely old-fashioned courtroom drama, done in a heavy-handed manner.

First Rate Aussie Drama

Laurie from East Grinstead, England, 13th May, 2004

A first rate Aussie drama, although at times it did play like a superior tv movie. The prevailing sense of racism which is so apparant throughout, was a slur on Australian and world politics throughout the 50's and 60's, and this trial could have been in London, New York or S Australia where it takes place. Cast is first rate and the script far more intelligent than in most American movies. It almost does not matter if the black man accused of murder did or did not do the crime, by the end politics had taken over.

Are you for real?

Australians are well aware of their potted history and abysmal treatment of her indiginous folk. Has it ever occurred to you that the first subjugators of these beautiful people were actually British??

As for your warning never to be 'sucked into watching Neighbours...' if the rest of the world took that view of Britain today based on her history your music and film industry would go out of business.

Australians Are Pants !

A Customer from London, 25th August, 2004

This is an excellent if somewhat upsetting film. As in Rabbit Proof Fence it exposes the dark underbelly of Australia.Namely the abject racism and cruelty white Australians have continued to inflict upon the Aboriginal people. Based on a true story it is both well acted and well scripted, with excellent performances from the lead actors (Charles Dance is especially convincing). Please watch this and never get sucked into watching Neighbours or listening to Kylie again !!!

Worth watching

Nick Ellis from Herne Bay, Kent, 2nd March, 2005

It's possible that I was watching a different film to everyone else. The history of Australia's bleak race relations is occasionally touched on, but rarely really given time. We all know about Savannah, few us know about Adelaide's past. This is a well researched and interesting film which, whilst not one of the all time greats, is thought provoking and well played. I disagree that Carlyle is the best thing in it. In fact, I think this is one of his worst performances. His Irish / Australian accent frequently crosses o'er the sea to Skye and back, which is a bit distracting. If you're interested in modern history - particularly bits you won't have given much thought about before - then this is a good film to watch.

Tedious

Alexxe from from Glasgow, 14th November, 2009

While the subject matter is excellent - the possible unfair treatment of an Aboriginal man by the Australian court system - and this is left ambiguous to the end - the screen treatment is flat and boring. Even Carlyle who is usually excellent, seems a bit distracted here. Colin Friels is good as a religious figure.

Black and White

Would have been a no more than three star pot-boiler court-room drama but for the incredibly realistic way that the film captures the norms of South Australian society of the era. The supporting cast were excellent.
