Written by Luc Besson, TAXI is a fast-paced comedy thriller, in which former pizza delivery guy Daniel (Samy Naceri) embarks on a new career as a taxi driver in his specially-adapted high-speed car. Oblivious to his passenger's day job, he demonstrates his talents to police officer Emilien (Frederic Diefenthal) and consequently Daniel is forced to accept a new role as the personal driver of Emilien's police car. Soon Daniel is in over his head in an adventure that involves German bank robbers, a legion of pizza delivery boys, and much more.

Radio Times

The fancy automobile stunts are everything in this puerile, paper-thin comedy thriller scripted by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element). Speed-freak taxi driver Samy Naceri and timid cop Frédéric Diefenthal team up to catch a slick gang of bank robbers, leading to much squealing of tyres through the streets of Marseille. Had it been played seriously (à la Ronin), this might have been a cracker. Unfortunately, director Gérard Pirès adds feeble Carry On-style stabs at slapstick humour as the couple screw up the case and the bumbling Diefenthal attempts to woo a ludicrously statuesque police officer (supermodel Emma Sjöberg). Although the cars are turbo-charged, the script's battery is as flat as a pancake.

Ok, so I initially had doubts about this one. My French is a long way from perfect and I thought that would spoil the whole film if I was constantly staring at the subtitles. Not so! From start to finish I found this to be as captivating as any other film of the same genre of any language.

The plot is simple. There are bad guys in fast cars and our unlikely hero is needed to help the police capture them regardless of not actually having a drivers licence. The action is fast and the car chase/stunts are very well done. Unlike other car orientated films (Fast & Furious and so on) the plot isn't too serious and their is a good deal of humour to lift the story.

I found this to be a fast, fun and funny film - even though I didn't understand a word of it!

Missing subtitles revealed

Jim Gray from Scotland, 11th April, 2005

Ok, this is a great little film, and I'm sure you'll all know what it's about from the other reviews and the synopsis - a gang of German bank robbers in red Mercedes cars are targeting French banks and it's up to a haphazard cop and a reluctant taxi driver to foil them - but what's got me writing here are the reviews that are saying this dvd is missing a lot of the subtitles. Well, it isn't - unless you've got your widescreen TV set to zoom. I'll try to explain: the film is widescreen but isn't anamorphic (the picture doesn't appear vertically stretched for higher resolution on 16:9 displays). Many people leave their widescreen TV's on automatic mode so that it re-sizes the screen accordingly to the material on display. The problem with this dvd presentation is that the TV will jump to a non-anamorphic zoom frame mode and some of the subtitles will be cut off. After sitting watching the movie for around 5 minutes, I quickly came to realise that entire lines of dialogue were going past without any subtitling whatsoever, or, a line of subtitles would appear but the dialogue would continue and it was apparent more subtitles would be needed to explain what was fully being said. At that point it occured to me that there should possibly be a second line of subtitles, so I flicked my TV (a Toshiba) into Subtitle mode (it shifts the top line of the screen up a few inches) and suddenly a second line of subtitles became visible. I discovered that whenever someone was saying only one line of dialogue, the subs would default to the bottom line, thus being cut off completely by the standard zoom mode and making it appear as though large parts of the film wasn't subtitled at all. Most widescreen TV's have a subtitle mode or a similar mode that lets you custom shift the screen yourself. Failing that you could use a non-anamorphic stretch mode. Hope this helps.

Who would have thought the French could be so entertaining!

Rob D from Barnsley, 18th April, 2006

I have to say that this film really surprised me. As soon as it came on I started getting grief from my girlfriend because she would have to read sub titles. But 5 minutes later her tone had changed. Live action stunts, gripping car chases and witty script mean the pace of the film never really drops. You are carried along so fast that you forget that you are reading the words. Light hearted, funny and fast! Well worth watching. Even the girlfriend, who is not a film person agrees.

This is a good French action and comedy movie! Fast paced and worthy of watching. The subtitles work well and I would recommend this film to you.

zany fun...

This is a film for people who just want to sit back, have a few laughs and enjoy the ride. The story involves two complete opposites, a taxi driver with a love for speed and a hihly strung cop. Together they must outwit some high speed bank robbers. Check it out.

Fast paced fun

Sezzle from , 25th September, 2009

What fun - a film that puts together a grumpy cop who can't drive and a lovable fast-talking criminal who drives on the edge of the law. The relationship between the two is captivating, and car chases are hair-raising. The language is simple so that despite the subtitles no-one should have any problem keeping up. My only complaint would be that the chase at the end when they finally might/might not catch the criminals after all doesn't really live up the promise of the rest of the film: they could have made more of the scooters and had more fun.

Poor

Bobulousmous from , 20th September, 2009

Possibly the worst film I have seen in a while. No plot, no acting and not even that many fast cars. Just a peaugeot and mercedes. Really bad.
