The debut feature film for director Wes Anderson and actors Luke and Owen Wilson, BOTTLE ROCKET is a kind-hearted yet quirky tale about three friends who fashion themselves into modern-day robbers. After leaving his voluntary confinement in a mental home, Anthony (Luke Wilson) joins his friends Dignan (the film's co-writer, Owen Wilson) and Bob (Robert Musgrave) in a bookstore heist. In need of direction, more so than money, the three guys prove to be polite, but rather inept criminals. Nevertheless the job is a success, and the trio head out to a remote hotel, planning to lay low until they can return to join a gang of supposed professional criminals lead by the infamous Mr. Henry (James Caan).
Based on their own 1994 black-and-white short, the expanded film is part buddy movie, crime caper, and slacker comedy. First-time director Wes Anderson displays a sure hand, creating carefully composed scenes full of rich detail (shot on 27mm film, to ensure greater depth of field), schematic use of colour, and amusing, irreverent music (including a score by Mark Mothersbaugh, founding member of the punk band Devo). Full of sure-footed performances, BOTTLE ROCKET is a charming meditation on friendship, love, and innocence, conveyed with great humour and refreshing goodwill.

Radio Times

This agreeably eccentric comedy crime drama marked the debut feature of Wes Anderson. It tells the story of a dopey trio (Luke and Owen Wilson, Robert Musgrave) who bewilderingly think they are cut out for a life in crime. Anderson observes their bungling antics and personality disorders with obvious affection, while continually taking the episodic tale in unexpected directions. The then largely unknown leads deliver expertly judged performances and there's a nice cameo from James Caan. Anderson made even more of an impression with his quirky and sophisticated comedy follow-up Rushmore.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Enjoyable and witty small-scale independent film that manages some original variations on a familiar theme.

A Decent Start For Anderson

David Levy from Totteridge, London, 20th April, 2004

If you were ever wondering where the genius of Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums' Wes Anderson started, the answer can be found here, in 'Bottle Rocket'.

Like so many other low budget, first time movies, (Swingers is a prime example) a simple storyline is merely a platform for clever dialogue and identifiable, rich characters. The two leads, played by Owen and Luke Wilson, seem to be having a blast throughout, and this reflects on the film as a whole.

Unfortunately, the simple 'buddy heist' storyline doesn't live up to the promise, and in the end, the movie can only be recommended as a curio, and no better.

For a first feature film, incredible.

Noel Clay from Colchester, England, 15th November, 2004

Having seen and loved both 'Rushmore' and 'The Royal Tenenbaums', I guess I had pretty high expections of Wes Anderson's first film as well. But of course there's a chance it wouldn't live up to that -- after all, this was his first real experience as a filmmaker. If nothing else, this is at least the film that made the careers of Anderson, Owen Wilson and Luke Wilson ... but it IS something else. It's also a fantastic movie.

Following the story of three messed-up kids who dream of being robbers, 'Bottle Rocket' has all the quirkiness, brilliant dialogue and hilariously funny moments that make Wes Anderson movies so great. This just goes to show that Anderson is a true genius -- he knew right from the start what kind of movies he wanted to make, and he went for it. The Wilson brothers are also great in their first major acting roles.

Obviously if you're a Wes Anderson fan you should check this out, or even if you're just in the mood for an intelligent, quirky comedy.

Fun!

A Customer from Yorkshire, 15th September, 2004

Loads of fun, typical of the minds behind Rushmore and The Royal Tannenbaums. Luke and Owen Wilson are hilarious as the bungling pals getting involved in a hopeless robbery and going on the run. Luke is a hopeless romantic (in a sweet subplot he woos a hotel maid); Owen an insecure dreamer, a wannabe master-criminal. Witty performances, a quirky script and a nice cameo from James Caan too.

It's not Gold....

ramoniac from london, 21st January, 2005

But there are a couple of great Owen Wilson moments. The Robbery had us in fits. It's also got a 3rd Wilson brother in it who plays a really mean older brother!

Should win you over

RJNeb2 from , 19th January, 2010

A little rough around the edges but Wes Anderson's first film is a very good indication of some real talent. Although the plot fizzles into a rather lame heist scenario (with Owen Wilson as a particularly inept robber), the throwaway dialogue and affable performances by the two Wilson brothers give it a goofy, quirky charm that's hard to resist.

Amiable comedy

jesuskenevil from , 13th January, 2010

A gentle heist/comedy/buddy movie that never gets out of first gear but, hay, who’s rushing? Deftly handled performances all round, quirky story line and a genuinely affecting love story made this a very enjoyable 90 mins. Keep your expectation down and you won’t be disappointed.

A big surprise

Gravy from , 9th June, 2009

This film was much better than expected. No way near an ponderous and indulgent as Wes Anderson's other films. It's shame he hasn't stuck to this style a bit more.
