Radio Times

Harassed and overworked air-traffic controller Jack Chester (John Candy) badly needs a vacation and takes his family away to holiday on a beach. But almost from the moment they arrive, things start to go wrong and the supposedly restful trip turns into a nightmare every bit as stressful as Jack's job. The combined talents of John Candy and Carl Reiner should have ensured a better end product than this thin comedy which, despite some good moments, fails to fully exploit its promising premise.

Gentle family fun

Hoffa from Lincolnshire, UK, 7th June, 2004

I'm a fan of John Candy, and saw Summer Rental a few years ago. I thought I'd take the chance to watch it with my son as he loved Uncle Buck. There aren't many laugh out loud moments, but if you are a Candy fan it's worth watching. The stressed out Candy is forced to take a holiday which initially appears to be paradise but turns out to be something else. A catalogue of mishaps works us towards the usual 'loser comes good' cheesy ending. Still, definitely worth a watch, despite not been up to the standard of Uncle Buck.

This was a very funny film, typical John Candy style. A bit dated but well worth a watch

SUMMER RENTAL

WAS OK - I WAS SO LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING IT AGAIN - BUT I GUESS MY SENSE OF HUMOUR HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS.....!!! - NO 'LAUGH OUT LOUD' BITS WHICH I EXPECT FROM A COMEDY - PROBABLY OK FOR YOUNG KIDS/FAMILES THOUGH.

John Candy is a legend!

A Customer from Knebworth, 3rd December, 2008

I think this a wicked film. If you like John Candy you are sure to like this. I love it when he loses his rag while waiting in the queue to get a table at the fish restaurant. Brilliant! some other really funny bits but I dont wan't to give the film away.
