A Harvard law professor takes up the case of a southern black man on death row for murdering a white woman, a crime he may not have committed. Discovering the truth proves difficult, as a Bible-spouting inmate and the brutal police officer who convicted the condemned man lead the professor down blind alleys and into treacherous waters.

Radio Times

In this entertaining thriller, Sean Connery plays a law professor called in to help Blair Underwood, who claims he has been wrongly convicted of the murder of a young child, partly because local cop Laurence Fishburne beat a confession out of him. Connery is as charismatic as ever in a story that, though a little uneven at times, manages some pleasing twists on the usual formula. Director Arne Glimcher throws in enough red herrings to keep viewers guessing right to the end and makes good use of the Everglades locations.

Run of the mill thriller with predictable twists and ending. Fine with a few lagers.

Just Cause

A bold and brilliant film. The plot is fairly straight forward and predictable, but superb acting by Sean Connery and Lawrence Fishburne makes the film a delight to watch. It is free of the boring legal stuff associated with some films with similar plots.
I will recommend the film to anyone who is interested in watching good actors acting good parts.

Just awful

NMT from , 10th October, 2007

Connery, a Harvard law professor, takes on a case to help a murderer on death row. Fishburne is the cop who extracted the confession that got him there. Point one: there is no impending court case for the man on death row, so why on earth does a Harvard law professor take on a job which requires no law at all, simply detective work? And it goes downhill from there. This is an unimaginative, unintelligent thriller that starts off silly and gets sillier. Connery is unconvincing and the script is truly dreadful. There numerous moments of convenience - 'I know! Why don't you do that!' - so that the film can jump to the next scene. These moments make little sense. Further, you can see every twist 5 to 10 minutes before it arrives. Think about what you are seeing for more than a split second and the whole premise starts falling apart. The direction is by the numbers with the result that there is very little suspense whatsoever. I stuck with it, but breathed a sigh of relief when it was over! My one star is for Fishburne and Harris, both of whom turned in decent performances.

Tense viewing.

Don't read into this film too much, as it'll likely fall apart under examination. However, Just Cause is a great, tense film for those who have a taste for this particular genre of 90's thrillers. Worth a view just to see Ed Harris playing utterly insane. He really is a little too good at it.
