The 1932 publication of Charles Nordhoff and James Norton Hall's Mutiny on the Bounty sparked a revival of interest in the titular 1789 ship mutiny, and this 1935 MGM movie version won the Oscar for Best Picture. Clark Gable stars as Fletcher Christian, first mate of the infamous HMS Bounty, skippered by Captain William Bligh (Charles Laughton), the cruelest taskmaster on the Seven Seas. Bligh's villainy knows no bounds: he is even willing to flog a dead man if it will strengthen his hold over the crew. Christian despises Bligh and is sailing on the Bounty under protest. During the journey back to England, Bligh's cruelties become more than Christian can bear; and after the captain indirectly causes the death of the ship's doctor, the crew stages a mutiny, with Christian in charge. Bligh and a handful of officers loyal to him are set adrift in an open boat. Through sheer force of will, he guides the tiny vessel on a 49-day, 4000-mile journey to the Dutch East Indies without losing a man. Historians differ on whether Captain Bligh was truly such a monster or Christian such a paragon of virtue (some believe that the mutiny was largely inspired by Christian's lust for the Tahitian girls). The movie struck gold at the box office, and, in addition to the Best Picture Oscar, Gable, Laughton, and Franchot Tone as one of the Bounty's crew were all nominated for Best Actor (they all lost to Victor McLaglan in The Informer). The film was remade in 1962 and adapted into the revisionist 1984 feature The Bounty with Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian and Anthony Hopkins as Captain Bligh.~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Radio Times

This version of the famous nautical adventure from Lewis Milestone is a memorable successor to the Oscar-winning 1935 movie. Milestone deserves credit for surviving laborious re-shoots and difficulties caused by Marlon Brando's temperament: “I was as near to a nervous breakdown as I've ever been,” said the veteran director, who made his name with All Quiet on the Western Front in 1930. Though controversial, Brando's performance as Fletcher Christian is impressive as he moves from arrogant fop to gallant hero, despite his somewhat strangulated English accent. Trevor Howard is fine as the sadistic Captain Bligh, but the Tahiti interlude is a sequence definitely to be missed.

A bounty of an epic

Lighthouse from , 9th June, 2004

When you think this film is nearly seventy years old, you can’t help but wonder what it would have turned out like if it was remade. Oh dear, it was, wasn’t it.

So stick with the original and enjoy. Charles Laughton is the infamous Captain Bligh. His cry of 'Mr Christian' has been well parodied but it was a fine performance by any standards. But the problem with such an old film is that we know more about the stars private and not so private lives which can take away from the performances. So try and forget about all the legends when watching.

Clark Gable could act despite his 'King of Hollywood' label but he is in pure hero mode here. Franchote Tone does a good job with his sympathy bit but the film wins or loses on Laughtons wicked Captain.

So a great film if you like this sort of thing. An epic in every way. Now if only they could have filmed it in colour. A masterpiece of Hollywood from the great days of film.

Old but Bountiful

A Customer from Surrey, 7th November, 2004

To be honest I actually thought i'd ordered the colour remake version of this film, my dads always pestered me to watch it you see. But with hindsight i'd quite happily decree that this was a pleasant twist of fate, as I thoroughly enjoyed this movie as did my partner.
Considering it was made in the 1930's i would say that the cinematography was outstanding and the effects (if indeed they used any) were 100% convincing.
The acting was mainly excellent, although there are always exceptions in every movie and i would not hesitate to recommend this picture to anyone. It is indeed a classic with interesting special features which definitely enhanced the dvd. Trust me and give this black and white work of art a go!

Too long, very dull

JustKewl from , 15th January, 2010

I found this film to be too long. Over two hours? the book would've taken less time to read. The acting was all that great, I'm especially thinking of the guy who played Mr Christian. The book was a much better read.

Great film

I make a habit of watching some of the great films of the past and reading some of the classic books; i'm rarely disappointed and i wasn't with this. Some great scenes, some great acting and i love the way they tease us with Hawaiin girls of the 50s. You'll enjoy it.

Great story, great adaptation. I now look forward to the Brando remake which I've not seen before.
