Based on the novel by Stephen King, Lawrence Kasdan's DREAMCATCHER follows four friends who receive psychic powers as children when they aid and befriend a mentally retarded boy named Duddits. As adults, Jonesy (Damian Lewis), Henry (Thomas Jane), Beaver (Jason Lee), and Pete (Timothy Olyphant), reunite every winter at a cabin deep in the Maine woods to hunt, drink, and celebrate the bond they share with Duddits (Donnie Wahlberg) and each other. However, this year their wilderness reunion is marred by disturbing incidents which begin with the discovery of a lost, sick hunter and a frozen figure in the middle of a remote road. As events escalate and horrific creatures emerge from unsightly spaces, heavily armed government operatives, led by the imposing Colonel Curtis (Morgan Freeman), arrive in the area, and soon the situation becomes an all-out battle for the fate of humanity.
DREAMCATCHER features aspects of other King screen adaptations such as STAND BY ME, IT, and THE TOMMYKNOCKERS, along with films such as THE THING and SIGNS. Seemingly disparate elements that filter into this giddily strange story include creeping red mould, fatal bowel movements, deadly worms with needlelike teeth, an imaginary space called the "memory warehouse," a deranged military officer, and an ailing man obsessed with Scooby-Doo. Director/screenwriter Kasdan, along with veteran screenwriter William Goldman, revel in the absurdity of the tale, crafting an often chilling and sometimes funny film that delights in its own thoroughly entertaining outrageousness.

Radio Times

One of Dreamcatcher's few memorable moments concerns an extra-terrestrial life form erupting from the bottom of an unfortunate gentleman while he's on the lavatory. It's an entirely appropriate image, since down the toilet is exactly where this, the latest in a long line of poor quality Stephen King adaptations, is headed. The bizarre plot has four childhood friends on a hunting trip rescuing a deranged oddball who, it soon emerges, is host to some sort of alien parasite. While they attempt to evade the monster, the military — in the shape of Morgan Freeman — arrives, determined to eradicate all trace of the shape-shifting beastie. Despite a screenplay co-written by William Goldman (who brilliantly adapted King's Misery), initially effective atmospherics from director/co-writer Lawrence Kasdan and creditable performances, this is soon hobbled by poor quality CGI and an abysmally incoherent final act. As usual, King fans are advised to stick to the book.

Helps if you have read the book !!

A Customer from Leeds, England, 9th February, 2004

Having recently read the book I was intrigued to see how such a complex storyline could be made into a film. In the end I think it is a reasonable job but if you hadn't read the book which goes into so much more depth and detail it will appear confusing and disjointed. As a piece of horror entertainment it is good, if you've read the book it's great to see it come to life !!

Abysmal

Rich Dimambro from Aberdeen, Scotland, 16th September, 2004

What a let down! A promising start rapidly descends into farce. Morgan Freeman (one of the reasons I rented this) and the rest of the quality cast are totally wasted here. What were they thinking? No other writer would have got away with this effort. Avoid.

Gory but good

I haven’t read the book by Stephen King so I had absolutely no idea what to expect.

The name "Dreamcatcher" doesn't give any clues to what the film is about and I think is quite misleading.

I actually enjoyed this film and it maintained my interest for the whole 2 hours which seemed to go very quickly.

I enjoyed the question marks throughout the film, of which most of it got answered. Those that didn’t just got left to the imagination.

Ok, the basic plot line (without giving too much away). Four friends go to a cabin in the woods, these guys have been given a special gift (wont tell you what) by a new friend they made when they were boys. Anyway, "something" happens that the whole area has to be quarantined and there seems to be some sort of disease spreading which was caused by some aliens. So its a fight between the army, the four men and the aliens, with the four men using their special gifts to give them the edge.

It was a bit too gory for me, but if you are into aliens and the supernatural then you will enjoy this film. Definitely worth renting.

Weird, sometimes silly, but still watchable!

John O'Boyle from Ayrshire, Scotland, 13th February, 2004

Basically with this movie you are trying to figure out what's going on, you realise exactly what is going on sooner than you thought, but you still do not know what exactly IS going on. Sounds confusing, well this film is a bit. It starts off really well, very intriguing and well written, and each of the characters are funny and good to watch in their own way. But once the first mystery is revealed(in a very thrown straight at you manner as if you should have known) it kind of turns into a bit if a basic catch and chase film, but you are still left pondering over the more mind niggling things like how and why and who. It's hard exactly to go into it without spoiling it for anyone. I have not read the book but know that when you are reading a book you somehow accept really bizarre things happening, but on screen it sometimes comes across as more stupid! And the ending is pretty bad, in a sort of 'so that's it?' kind of way.

But overall I did not think it was too bad, I wouldn't tell people not to ever see it, not where too much cash was involved anyway. But for an evening?s viewing it's not too bad, I have seen far worse. But far better too.

What a bizarre film. Entirely a body-snatcher, alien invasion popcorn film with some quite comic yet unpleasant scenes. The story follows four friends who have strange, otherworldly abilities as they take a trip to a cabin isolated in the woods. Yes, sounds cliche alright. But when they find a man astray in the woods and take him in, they realise he isn't just infected with an alien parasite... but also how they came to have these psychic abilities. Very much an entertainment film, Morgan Freeman brings some integrity as a derailed military commander send to deal with the imminent alien threat.

..& could have been reasonable & scary, but turns into nonsensical tripe; Morgan Freeman gets dreadful lines, & looks embarrassed; Damien Lewis manages to shine through the fog of guff.
