Films about Asian integration in Britain have tended to be both serious (My Son the Fanatic) and marginalised (My Beautiful Laundrette), but this 1970s-set culture-clash comedy breaks the mould. It's thoroughly accessible and doesn't take itself too seriously as it follows the travails of a Pakistani dad, now married to an Englishwoman, who is desperate that his sons buckle under and accept arranged marriages. The boys, heady with teenage freedom and feeling “British” as opposed to “Asian”, are resistant, and family wrangling ensues. Funny, charming and refreshing, this is a great little film.

Often broad but always enjoyable comedy that, for all its use of stereotypical characters and situations, manages to be truthful about family relationships.

Hilarious

Well I thought it was histerical. Loads of catch phrases that I'm using in my daily vocabulary, like 'Make a bloody show of me missus'. Most of the Pakistani cast you will have seen appearing in the major TV soaps and they all do a good job at being very British, after all they are !! The story line is OK and went a bit flat 3/4 of the way through, but all in all it was worth watching and will make you chuckle.

Brilliant British Film !

A Customer from Bournemouth, England, 30th September, 2005

East Is East is about cultural differences and the difficulties of assimilation. It's about the dangers of losing one's unique identity when leaving behind one country for another. Above all, however, it's about family dynamics, and how children inevitably rebel against their parents' beliefs and traditions - that's how they grow and become independent.East Is East ponders a lot of questions, and, as with all well made motion pictures, doesn't offer simple, cut-and-dried answers for any of them. When the movie draws to a close, there is a conclusion, but it's relatively open-ended. In cinematic terms, East Is East offers a more satisfying meal than one might expect to get at George's English Chippy.

A super laugh out loud comedy, that brilliantly captures Salford in 1971, and its themes of cultures is tastefully and cleverly done. Highly recommended
