The legendary James Stewart (HARVEY, VERTIGO) stars as George Bailey. George is a noble man who has spent much of his life on a crusade to stop shady local businessman Henry Potter (Lionel Barrymore - TREASURE ISLAND, DUEL IN THE SUN) from taking over the picturesque town of Bedford Falls. However, on a typically snow-covered Christmas Eve, George plays right into Potter's hands when his uncle manages to lose a considerable amount of their family business' money on the way to the bank. Ironically, Potter discovers the missing money and hides it, knowing that its disappearance will tarnish the Baileys' white-than-white reputation. Taking responsibility for the shortage and realising that he faces prison, George attempts to kill himself but in a bizarre twist of fate is visited by a guardian angel. In true Dickensian style, George's newfound friend gives him the opportunity to glimpse a world without him in it and the repercussions his absence has on his nearest and dearest.

Nominated for numerous Academy Awards (including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director) and ranking at number 11 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 greatest movies, Director Frank Capra (MR. DEED'S GOES TO TOWN, LOST HORIZON) managed to create a poignant and feel-good film that has stood the test of time and is rightly considered to be the quintessential Christmas classic.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Superbly assembled small-town comedy drama in a fantasy framework; arguably Capra's best and most typical work.

Happy fun

Phil from Midlands, 7th November, 2003

I generally don't like old films. I've got nothing particularly against them, I just don't find them very interesting. I was vaugely disappointed, then, when a friend brought this round to watch one Christmas.

I was really suprised to find that it was a great film and, regardless of it's age, still great to watch and with a lot to say.

If you're like me with old films, you should still try this out. I really doubt you'll be disappointed.

Walk into the Light!

mrdee from WEST MIDLANDS, 27th November, 2003

Have you ever had those dark depressing moments where you have wondered why int he world you are here? Thoughts which simply drag you down and in turn conjure up further reasons for the uselessness of your life.
This movie explores these issues, and gradually leads you out of the darkness into the light. On the surface this seems like a simple tale of a good hearted guy who has a bad time and gets rescued from it. On a deeper level however it tackles the number one cause of apathy and depression: the belief that our lives do not amount to much and we are useless cogs in society. This film will help everyone to understand that no matter who we are, we do impact on other people in subtler ways than we ever thought possible. Its always a good thing to revisit this fact through this film. We will all go through periods in life which mimic the mental state of the main character who thinks of suicide. Yet we do not always have a friend on hand to lead us out through such states. But what you can have is this film... the memory of this film to remind you that you are a person, and your life does matter. A great film to watch wherever you are in life.. it never hurts to remind yourself of the uniqueness of yourself and your beneficial impact on other people.

James 'Possibly the Greatest Ever' Stewart!

younglochinvar from from Prestatyn, 18th September, 2007

The 'feel good' movie of 'feel good' movies. A marvellous performance by (when you consider the prop's available at the time) perhaps the greatest actor ever.

A movie to make you smile!

Charlotte from London, 14th June, 2004

What a lovely movie. I had always heard of it but never seen it and I thought it was about time that I took a look to see why it is rated so highly in the movie world. I was pleasantly surprised. It truely is a classic and sometimes you have to say, they simply don't make movies like this anymore. The story was different to what I expected, but in a good way. I had the hugest grin on my face at the end that couldn't be wiped away. A true classic that really should be watched by all - with a lovely moral behind it!

I looked forward to watching this film for months but after watching it I was very dissapointed! It was slow and quite boring. The only good thing I can say about this film is that it was very 'nice', no violence, sex, swearing or anything that could possibly offend - a good film to show Grandma!!
