Glitz, glamour and blind, naked ambition collide in this tale of a young exotic dancer clawing her way to stardom in glitter city, Las Vegas. Nomi Malone has left her name and her past behind to become a big splash in the all-stops-out dance extravaganzas of the Vegas stage. Along the way, she's forced to resume her lap-dancing past, but an empathetic (and less naive) costume designer takes her in and gives her the chance which becomes her cannon-shot to the top. Severe mood swings, back-stabbing left right and center, sequins, lesbianism and some of the most wonderfully unbelievable dialogue ever penned make SHOWGIRLS an instant Midnight Movie classic.

Radio Times

According to director Paul Verhoeven, his controversial and much-reviled showbiz exposé is an incisive look at sleazy Las Vegas life. To almost everyone else, it is an instant kitsch classic charting the rise of small-town girl Elizabeth Berkley from tawdry lap dancer to famed topless revue headliner. Practically nothing works in this tacky sashay through Valley of the Dolls clichés and unerotic burlesque. Apart from head showgirl Gina Gershon, everyone is miscast and the end result is nothing more than a posh sexploitation flick with tarnished good intentions. Sexist, offensive and pathetic? Or a gritty, truthful wake-up call? You decide if you can stop giggling for long enough!

Dazzling, exciting, and very very sexy!

AnnBowman from Aberdeenshire, 23rd December, 2004

Or so the dialogue claims. Actually, this is probably the least erotic, worst acted, poorly scripted piece of exploitative trash you'll ever see. Fact. And yet, why is it so damned fantastic?

Take some moderately successful actors (Kyle MacLachlan, Gina Gershon, Alan Rachins etc) and pair them up with a deliciously hopeless Saved by the Bell reject, Elizabeth Berkley. She can't dance. She can't act. She can't emote in any way. Pretty much all she can do is bang stuff; cars, fries, fellow dancers.

Then add the plot, such as it is - 42nd Street with gratuitous nudity - and make the 'actors' deliver some of the most ludicrous lines ever written with irony-free sincerity. Then, for bad measure, throw in a really nasty rape sequence, dreadful choreography and the worst sex scene ever committed to celluloid (swimming pool, neon palm trees, dolphin noises - you'll know the one).

Basically, this film is just wrong. Paul Verhoeven either has no clue of the boundaries of good taste or just couldn't care less about them. Every possible wrong turn is taken, every line crossed, it is an absolute car wreck of a film. But it is more than just bad; it is magnificently, hilariously, luridly, unmissably bad. It is the Worst Picture of the Decade (Razzie Awards). It deserved it. You’ll love it. Go watch it. NOW. (Last chance ice…)

Naked depression

A Customer from Peterborough, England, 22nd September, 2004

It's pretty easy to see why this movie failed. If you actually sit & watch it, rather than just skip to the good bits, it is actually a very bleak & depressing movie. The advance publicity would have ensured that most of the audience consisted of young men who just wanted to see the tall leggy girl from 'Saved By The Bell' dance naked, which they would have indeed seen..... a lot! The plot, however, about a runaway trying to make it in a world where everyone is manipulating everyone else is such a downer that it must have killed the mood for them somewhat.
The sad thing is, even if there were some people in the audience actually interested in the story, it simply doesn't quite work. It's difficult to say why this is exactly, but the fact remains that I just couldn't get involved in the plot, or really care what happened to any of the characters.

Oh. My. God. NO!

A Customer from Marlow, England, 27th May, 2007

I've just read some of the other reviews for this film. Someone suggested there was a plot in this film. They're a better person than me to have found a plot in this utter, utter drivel.

camp classic...

Jahi from , 12th July, 2009

definately one of the most under-rated films of all time. exceptional dialogue, over the top characters and relationships that will forever be immortalized (Nomi and Krystal). a camp classic that never fails to satifsy. If only Sharon Stone had a cameo.

Very clever, very hot

orangeseed from , 13th June, 2009

The film has got a clever plot and very hot girls. It has to be watched very carefuly as a lot happens in seconds between dancing. It's all about one-two quick phrases which become important later. The problem is that it's too clever for those who like films about lap dancing and too erotic for those who like clever plots. That's why so many people downrate it. The best thing is to watch it yourself and then decide. Turn it off after 1/2 hr if it's no good. But don't watch it in between - it needs and deserves full attention.
