Francis Ford Coppola's epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola paints a chilling portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America, masterfully balancing the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award nominations, and won three including Best Picture of 1972.

Radio Times

This crime drama and its 1974 sequel are among American cinema's finest achievements since the Second World War. The production problems are well documented — how Paramount wanted a quickie, how Francis Ford Coppola came cheap and how he turned the picture into an epic success, a box-office hit that was also an artistic triumph. His first masterstroke was casting Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton, four relative unknowns and one known risk; his next masterstroke was to keep cool under fire, like Michael Corleone himself, turning Mario Puzo's pulp novel into art and showing how capitalism and crime go hand in hand. It's thrilling, romantic, tense and scary — a five-course meal that leaves you hungry for more.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A brilliantly-made film with all the fascination of a snake pit: a warm-hearted family saga except that the members are thieves and murderers. Cutting would help, but the duller conversational sections do heighten the cunningly judged moments of suspense

Time Out

Theres plenty to object to in Francis Ford Coppolas insistently insular approach to Mafia life, played out here...

It reveals something new everytime you watch it!

OzValdo from Kent, 18th October, 2003

A true epic masterpiece! A winner of Best Picture in 1972, and also nominated for ten Academy Awards, I rate this film as the best gangster movie of all time.

But, classifying it within just a gangster movie does no justice to the tightly plotted script based on Mario Puzo’s novel. The way it weaves all the layers of story telling, and depicts the life of an Italian gangster family in America is remarkable. The story views the Mafia from the inside. It blends in family responsibility, a father’s legacy, and projects how power, respect, and loyalty is used to protect their own genre.

The large cast is artfully drawn together, which will put you at once into the world of The Godfather. It has strong performances by Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall. Marlon Brando who plays the ageing Don is best remembered for this role.

Solid directing by Francis Ford Coppola also make this a treat to watch. The way he cleverly structures his film creates sympathy for the characters who are essentially evil.

Nino Rota, the composer of the film does a brilliant job. Listening to the sad and nostalgic main theme itself tells you what the movie is about.

The film is packed with classic lines. It is quite long, but it is time well spent. It’s the first part of the trilogy, and when the credits roll you will yearn for the second. The best is yet to come!

A true Classic.

Fraggle from Lancashire, 8th November, 2003

This films is one of the reasons why services like this are such a great idea. Your average high street chain just doesn't have the room to store films like this.

I've been one of those people who didn't see this film until I rented it here. Cue everyone I've ever told that saying 'what do you mean, you've never seen The Godfather?'. Well, I have now... and it is amazing. Tightly scripted, inventively directed and wonderfully acted - definitely Coppola's best work before he started to believe his own hype.

Al Pacino is masterful. This is one of those films that truly deserve the Best Picture Oscar it won. This is a 'must see'.

More Like the Cod Father

A Customer from Sutton, 24th November, 2007

The film is like a wet fish. I really dont know what people see in this. Its dull, overly long, dated, and just plain poor. Not my cup of tea at all.

Simply Sensational

VIDEOMONSTER from , 6th February, 2010

This was a movie that I had heard alot about and finally watched for the first time (beginning to end). The performances are brilliant Brando is great and Pacino is very understated, Caan and Duvall are also able support. In the end this movie is about family and what it means to be a man with honour. Fabulous watch, for once a movie which lived upto its hype.

The film was very good, awesome, particularly Al Pacino's character as he came into his own in such a subtle way.
