ANGER MANAGEMENT, directed by Peter 'NUTTY PROFESSOR 2' Segal, looks into the life of Dave Buznik (Adam Sandler), an executive assistant at a pet clothing company. The mild-mannered but overly passive Dave is in love with his girlfriend, Linda (Marisa Tomei), yet his anxious personality keeps him from taking things further, both in their relationship and in his career. However, Dave's life takes a strange turn when he is wrongly accused of 'air rag'" on a flight and sentenced to mandatory anger management classes. Eccentric anger guru Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson) becomes Dave's therapist, but when Buddy abruptly moves in with Dave, the doctor-patient relationship takes an unusual turn.
An appropriate pairing of actors with oversized personalities, ANGER MANAGEMENT allows Nicholson to run amuck, while letting Sandler hone the mellower side of his cinematic presence. As Sandler's Dave becomes more bewildered at his predicament, Nicholson's Buddy teeters wildly between wise and rambunctious. Meanwhile, Tomei shines in her role as Dave's beloved. Of course, no mainstream Sandler movie would be complete without a number of familiar faces in supporting and cameo roles, and ANGER has them by the boatload. John Turturro steals every scene he's in; Luiz Guzman sports some remarkably unfortunate facial hair; Heather Graham shows up as a brownie-hurling blonde bombshell; and John C. Reilly appears as a bully-turned-Buddhist-monk. And to top it all off, there are cameos by renowned 'angry' sports figures Bobby Knight and John McEnroe, as well as former mayor of NYC, Rudy Giuliani.

Radio Times

Following in the wake of his art house experiment Punch-Drunk Love, Adam Sandler again gives a relatively restrained performance but is back in the mainstream with this comedy. He plays mild-mannered businessman Dave Buznik who, after a misunderstanding regarding some in-flight headphones, is ordered into anger management under the counsel of spirited shrink Dr Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson). Rydell's methods are unusual, to say the least — he moves in with Sandler while making a move on his girlfriend Marisa Tomei — but director Peter Segal never really mines the comedy that this pairing and premise deserve. However, this does get by on true star power, Nicholson being one of the very few Hollywood actors who can out-shout Sandler.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Sporadically amusing comedy for as long as Sandler's propensity for playing an aggressive man-child is held in check.

Unexpectedly funny and witty

This is one of these movies that does not get the mass media publicity and caught us by surprise. We found it hilarious, Jack Nickelson being at his very best again. Very enjoyable !

Hilarious

Niky from Brent, 11th December, 2003

This movie sees Jack Nicholson do what he does best. It features a whole array of familiar faces including John McEnroe. Adam Sandler is doing his usual good guy role and in the course of the movie slowly his character begins to metamorphose into an angrier and no so good guy. This is all induced by his anger management therapist (Jack Nicholson) who appears to be doing totally the opposite to what he is supposed to be doing. I definitely recommend this movie to everyone.

Underdeveloped

A Customer from Surrey, 7th July, 2004

I can't believe that so much talent was drawn to what is clearly a critically underdeveloped script. The plot is basically yet another trope on John Fowles' 'The Magus' (see 'The Game' amongst others) and tries to function off of themes which are not explored in any structured manner. ie. the notion of why Sandler's character is ripe for anger management is only lightly sketched and the enragement of a buddhist monk has the potential being humourous but the reasons why aren't even touched upon!

A few moments to make you smile, some great performances despite uni-dimensional characterisation but sadly no substance or anything to really laugh about.

A mild comedy

A Customer from Chelmsford, 23rd April, 2004

Despite Jack Nicholson and John Turturro I give this only three stars. I never find Adam Sadler very funny, he can do silly things, but his acting is not up to really good comedy. This would have been so much better with Michael Keaton in the role of the innocent amongst confusion.

Average but great cat

Bassman71 from , 3rd March, 2010

Man gets into a 'situation', wrongly accused of assault, goes on Anger Management course with wacky Doctor. Average comedy with Adam Sandler & Jack Nicholson on autopilot through most of the film. Lots of good cameos though & probably the funniest cat ever on film.

I loved every moment of this film. Jack Nicholson is excellent as the controlling influence in the plot. The twists and turns are unpredictable. Great entertainment with a message.
