Never ready Eddie

Kristian from Devon, 3rd May, 2004

Love him or hate him, Eddie Izzard is a comedic genius.

There's nothing like Eddie at his best, fast-paced, polished and extremely funny. Sadly, this is nothing like him at his peak. In my opinion his worst release to date, he struggles with an enormous venue, stage rust and at times material that is little better than that of a circuit comedian.

I was fortunate enough to go and see Eddie whilst he was warming up for his Sexie tour, he played to an intimate audience (only about 200 of us) and the first half was frankly boring. He talked a lot about his childhood which was interesting in a getting-to-know-him kind of way but he struggled for laughs. Having been away from the stand-up stage for 4years this wasn't unexpected, but the 2nd half he came out with a list of things to talk about and was on fire. I really expected the dvd to be like the 2nd half of what we experienced that night, but was disappointed.

There are instances when the show ignites, with his brain firing on all cylinders blurting out jokes, ideas and imagery so fast and furiously you can't fail to be won over, but these moments are too few and far between.

For my money, his earlier stuff is much better with Glorious, Definite Article and UnRepeatable being far far superior. However, if you want to see the self confessed action transvestite with boobies grab a copy of this and stare away!!!

If you've never watched Eddie Izzard before this really isn't one for you, try his earlier stuff. If like me you've followed him for years, just keep praying for a return to form.

Sexie: Funnie?

Edster from Powys, 31st December, 2003

Disappointing. Having seen previous material was expecting a laugh-a-minute. Got a laugh every half hour.

As Eddie Izzard keeps saying throughout this show when the audience is silent "should have been funnier".

I am a HUGE izzard fan, and I bought this on DVD. I have never watched it all the way through because it is so bad. I cringe and have to stop the DVD. Check out Circle, avoid this. Eddie should have this taken of the shelves.

LAZIE!

Norman Barry from Surrey, England., 16th February, 2010

I used to love Izzard, but having recently tried to watch 'Circle' and now this, I'm afraid I find him irritating rather than funny. I hung on for 30 minutes before jumping a couple of 'chapters' in the hope of a laugh which simply didn't arrive. His reliance on surreal ramblings is tired and lazy. He didn't get much response from the audience whilst I was watching, and this is the performance selected for commercial release! Was the most overt female clothing I've seen him in compensating for his anticipated lack of impact in performance? Worryingly, although it's been about a year (and I was never confused), he looked pretty hot from the waist down.

Rubbish

Come on Eddie, you used to be so funny; cats drilling behind the sofa, pyjamas in the land of the dead. What happened Eddie? Where's the laughs Eddie? Maybe some comedians are like some music acts. Release a few good albums, but as time wears on they lose the magic and the quality declines. Take the Beatles for example. At least they knew when to quit...
