Studio: UNIVERSAL PICTURES UK
Run time: 60 mins
Genres: Comedy

Released: November 17, 2003

Not content with presenting a straight-forward record of a live stand-up performance, Johnny Vegas creates a story where he is a comedian who, having become a big-time celebrity, finds he is no longer able to be funny. His manager has him kidnapped and continually humiliated and his dignity destroyed. As a result Johnny learns that comedy comes from pain and despair. Cut in with this ongoing story are performances from three of Johnny's stand-up shows.

A Good Stand-Up Wasted

Craig Buchanan from Hamilton, Lanarkshire, 13th June, 2004

I like Johnny Vegas and was looking forward to seeing a good length stand-up show from him, I ended up disappointed. There is very little stand-up and to be honest, only half as much of Johnny in this as there should be. Too much of a 'story' in this DVD detracts from what seems like a good stand-up show.

It's not a stand-up tape

mea66 from durham, 11th October, 2004

I think that's the problem. Stand-up commedian, the title etc meant that I expected a full stand-up set. It's not.

There is maybe 30mins of stand-up. The rest is a silly story around a ficticious tour.

A bit rubbish really. Shame I really like Jonny Vegas as well.

Much hyped but overall quite disappointing . The mixture of a plot line with live gigs just doesn't work in my opinion . However the DVD Extras section makes some redress with an outtakes offerring and "tough Audience" the live gig in full - which shows Johnny back to his best. "Who's ready for Ice cream ?" - I'll stick with the popcorn thanks !!!

Funny Guy

A Customer from Omagh, 11th August, 2009

The bulk of this DVD involves the 'rise' of Johnny Vegas after his fall from comedy genius. The acting is superb and it is easy to loose yourself in this 'riches to rags' story! The extras with Johnny's stand up is fantastic and an enjoyable departure from the main feature. Overall a great title and well worth renting.

Hmmm

A Customer from Bristol, UK, 21st May, 2007

I agree with most of the reviews here that the film itself (who's ready for ice-cream) is really poor. I can see what they were trying to do, but, just...No. *However* I do think it may well be worth renting this just for the 'tough crowd' extra. A three hour stand up slot by Vegas, heavily edited down, it shows Vegas at his best. He's got an audience who aren't scared to fight back and is obviously feeding off this to produce some of the best stand up I've ever seen.

He's An Entertainer!

Frenchie from Manchester, 23rd March, 2007

Johnny Vegas is one the best British stand ups ever. In the stand up scenes of this dvd you can see his soul bearing persona as he plays off the crowd and uses gigs as therapy sessions. If the stand up was all of this film it would have a fantastic document of his live act, but unfortunatly the is a laboured story added which needs to be fast fowarded through, its amazing that the director Stewart Lee, himself a fine comedian , let that get through the editing room while some of Johnny's best stand up moments are relegated to dvd extras.
