"My name is Sydney Bristow. Seven years ago I was recruited by a secret branch of the CIA called SD-6. I was sworn to secrecy, but I couldn't keep it from my fiance. And when the head of SD-6 found out, he had him killed. That's when I learned the truth: SD-6 is not part of the CIA. I've been working for the very people I thought I was fighting against. So, I went to the only place that could help me take them down. Now I'm a double agent for the CIA, where my handler is a man named Michael Vaughn. Only one other person knows the truth about what I do, another double agent inside SD-6. Someone I hardly know - my father." Includes all episodes from Season 1

An excellent spy series

Andrew from London, 5th March, 2004

I was unsure about this series at first; there was no doubt it had an engaging plot right from the start and the characters were all well played and the dialogue well written. However it also had a very banal side to it, comprised of the main character's (Sydney Bristow) social circle, who unaware of Sydney's true identity as a CIA agent live out their ordinary lives involved in such mundane activities as school, gossip, weddings, and affairs. There is a stark contrast between the secretive highly dangerous life Sydney leads as an undercover agent, to that of her 'home' life when not on a mission, when we are subjected to the trivial details of her friends social lives. I can only imagine that this was created in order to appeal to a wider audience; those that enjoy spy thrillers, and to those that enjoy soap operas.
Fortunately for the show the good outweighs the bad by a large degree. The action and suspense is brutal and realistic, the plots are convoluted and will keep you guessing all the way. And certainly by disc 4 onwards it seems the writers have a better understanding of their characters and the overall storyline, as things begin to get very interesting and the more mundane characters and aspects of the show thankfully take a back seat.
The primary characters are excellent in each of their roles, and certainly one of the best is Sydney's enstranged father, a cynical verteran CIA agent who keeps everyone at arms length yet obviously is desperate to strengthen ties with his now grown-up daughter. I can only imagine that the 2nd series will get even better.

Terrible

John from St Andrews, 15th October, 2006

This show has an adolescent target audience. If they are targetting any higher, they have failed miserably. The plots are horribly contrived and unimaginative (sneak around, get stuff, then fight some guys with karate chops). Lame lame lame. Like any series, it might get you addicted, so don't waste your time letting your brain turn to mush with this drivel. Take a preemptive strike and ignore its candy existence.

World's Worst Spies

A Customer from United Kingdom, 30th March, 2005

Yes, Jennifer Garner is very easy on the eye and everyone seems able to act. Beyond that this is tedious rubbish. I expect to suspend disbelief to a degree, but this is ridiculous. They kill the fiance within minutes of finding out (which seems overly harsh), but leave the real security risk running around loose for 3 months? She should never have got out of the building alive after her confrontation with SD-6 CEO Sloane. Then the CIA cheerfully tell a double agent, someone with a proven inability to keep her mouth shut, who has already betrayed her parent organisation, the identity of another double in SD-6. This is not unbelievable, it is just stupid. Bristow comes across as a whiny self-centred brat, constantly demanding special treatment and her smitten handler as an infatuated fool who gives it to her. Clearly the intent was to blind the audience with Garner's supermodel bone structure to hide the inconsistancies in the plot, but despite her stunning looks, she can't save this dog of a show.

Fantastic Spy Caper !!!

A Customer from Bradford, 17th May, 2009

I was genuinally surprised on how good this series was as I had never heard of it prior to a recommendation from a friend. The whole series builds up episode by episode and tells a fascinating story of an agent who becomes involved in a complex web of deceit, intrigue and survival. There is wonderful character development for all the characters and it runs at a brisk pace hardly letting you catch your breath.
