Run time: 110 mins
Collections: 100 Horror Films

Released: August 04, 2003

In Gore Verbinski's remake of Hideo Nakata's chilling horror film, a group of teenagers all die suddenly and inexplicably exactly one week after watching a mysterious videotape at a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. Journalist Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), a relative of one of the victims, begins an investigation that leads to a mountain resort where she discovers the tape, which contains footage of random and surreal images. After viewing the tape, Rachel receives a phone call stating that she, too, has seven days left to live. As the clock ticks away, Rachel enlists the help of her former boyfriend Noah (Martin Henderson), who is the father of her startlingly serious young son Aidan (David Dorfman). Assisted by the intuitive illustrations of Aidan and the initially reluctant research of Noah, Rachel attempts to discover the significance of the cryptic tape before her time is up.
The original RING, based on a novel by Koji Suzuki, was a cult phenomenon in Japan, spawning a sequel, a prequel, and other spin-offs. Although Verbinski's adaptation shares much in common with its Japanese counterpart, the director distinctly alters numerous plot elements and, in grandiose Hollywood style, employs a much larger budget. The beautiful cinematography is one of the more telling enhancements, along with added screen time for other characters, including the morose Richard Morgan (Brian Cox). However, the key to this RING is Watts, who shines through the creepy atmosphere in a role that follows her success in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. This would appear to be no coincidence, since the film comes across like a David Lynch version of an X-FILES episode that presents shockingly scary moments and makes the most out of the unknown.

The words “Hollywood remake” may fill film fans with dread — foreign language movies ruined by a refit for the multiplex crowd — but Mousehunt director Gore Verbinski's version of Hideo Nakata's Japanese horror classic is a surprisingly good effort that retains much of the unnerving, creepy atmosphere of the original. An unlabelled videotape is in circulation, bringing death after seven days to anyone who watches it. One of its victims is the niece of journalist Naomi Watts, who decides to uncover the source of the tape and find out whether this “curse” is real, a quest that's given added urgency after Watts chooses to view the video herself. Verbinski makes a couple of inventive additions — a horse going berserk on a car ferry is a brilliantly surreal innovation — and although the spine-chilling terror of the original is muted by the overuse of CGI, this is still a worthy substitute if you're not in the mood for subtitles.

supernatural

RIP from Manchester, 3rd April, 2005

Whether you enjoy this film depends on whether you can suspend belief far enough to enjoy this type of fantasy. It did not work for me, although I can understand people liking it. The suspense is well built up. I have seen the Japanese version as well as this remake, but I found too many loose ends in the storyline to make it interesting. If you have not seen it, I would say it is worth giving it a go. You may enjoy it. Even though it was not for me, I thought it was quite well produced.

worthy re-make of superior japanese shocker

A Customer from Nottingham, England, 14th September, 2003

I approached this re-make with a sense of trepidation; having seen and enjoyed the original, I was worried that an American version could leech out the brooding unease and outright terror provoked in me by the original. To my surprise, in many ways I found this to be a more 'enjoyable' experience. Naomi Watts gives a very convincing, yet ambiguous performance, as a distracted mother driven by her own journalistic curiosity into uncovering the facts surrounding a reputedly cursed home video, which somehow kills anyone one week after they've watched it. Glimpses of the tape are shown in increasing length, and are genuinely disturbing and dreamlike, while the premise is set up without any histrionics until the central character's curiosity is shared by the audience. Some of the original's more ambiguous story elements are expanded on here, while others are trimmed out completely, and the result is a more satisfactory plotline with less loose ends. While some of the shocks are clumsily handled, others, including a fantastic ferry-bound set-piece, are genuinely tense and unsettling, leaving the audience shaken and breathless. A faithful adaptation, there's still enough that's different to merit watching both, but anyone who missed the original would not be disappointed by this.

The Ring

I have watched this film twice now, and twice have I actually been shocked by certain snippets. And it's the snippets that grip you and send that matallic taste right to the back of your tongue.
I have been so intrigued by the cinematography techniques of this film that I am now convinced that the success of the film is simply down to two things: plot and camera work. If you ever rent this film out again, pause at the poignanat moments [eg first scene where girl walks into TV room] and carefully flick in pause mode the FF key. You will then get a frame by frame shot of what they put in the film. Amazing!! It's lke subliminal messaging. These horrific images are hitting you so quickly that your eyes are scanning them but not regnosing them whereas your mind views it all and is afraid. Clever eh??

Have a go and give me your thoughts!

If you're searching for a film that will really scare you this is it!

Lesley from Norwich, 1st December, 2003

Not having seen the Japanese original I had no idea what to expect with this, but any expectations I did have were far exceeded.

This is in my opinion one of the very, very few genuinely scary films ever made. Without giving too much away, the shocks just keep coming.

Truly horrifying without being in anyway gratuitous or gruesome, I recommend this wholeheartedly to all movie adrenalin junkies... with one warning: DON'T WATCH IT ALONE!

Wow - the Yanks have taken a classic Jap chiller and turned it pure evil. It seems that once a decade a horror film comes along that really slices the genre wide open and makes a whole new type of scary. This is that film of the 00's. I find very few films genuinely scary - I had a few shivers down my spine during What Lies Beneath and have been genuinely disgusted by the Saw series but this is different. My advice is to watch it with no pretentions as to what to expect in a very dark room and just let yourself get carried along. The cynics among you will find it hard to believe in the story-line but if you just watch what you see without analysis - trust me you will be that disturbed you will want to do what I did at the end, turn the lights on as bright as they go and watch Toy Story 2!

Not Bad

GaryI from , 16th November, 2009

This by far the best remake of oriental horror, and in its own right a good story well done. It's sort of a mystery with supernatural video tape that causes some horrorible deaths. Naomi Watts is excellent and this is a cut above the usual horror fare. Try it.
