Radio Times

Long before American Psycho made the transition to the big screen this equally nihilistic Bret Easton Ellis novel appeared, mapping out the fag end of 1980s yuppie-dom with its tale of Beverly Hills rich kids spaced out on drugs and drifting from sports cars to nightclubs. Unusually strong material for a studio movie, although the more controversial aspects of Ellis's book were toned down to benefit a rather conventional love story, Another Country director Marek Kanievska handles his cast well, drawing exceptional performances from James Spader as a smarmy pusher and Robert Downey Jr in an art-imitating-life role as a desperate addict. Still, compared to the absorbing Christiane F, this anti-drugs message film too often resembles an R-rated episode of Beverly Hills 90210.

Dark tale of the upper class junkie

Arun from Liverpool, UK, 14th May, 2005

A depressing film about a young man who drowns himself in the world of addiction and nobody could draw him out of his mess. James Spader is the smooth talking drug agent and Robert Downey Jr. in a role close to his real persona. Andrew McCarthy as the betrayed lover. The inherent sadness of the theme and the slow narration do not help the film

lesson to all drug abusers!

A Customer from GLAMORGAN, WALES, 20th October, 2005

ALTHOUGH I ENJOYED THIS FILM BECAUSE OF THE IMPECCABLE ACTING, IT WASN'T THE EASIEST TO WATCH AND DESERVED ITS '18' RATING. THE STORY OF CALIFORNIAN YUPPIES INDULGING IN DRUG TAKING WAS A REAL LESSON TO ANYONE THINKING OF TRYING DRUGS.

Totally agree with the customer from London - the film was a bit cheesy and didn't reflect the mood of the book at all. But what film ever does???? Nice soundtrack though.

ellis must not be really happy

A Customer from London, 20th January, 2005

I wouldn't say it's a bad movie since it's kinda entertaining but having read the book, I felt the film completely failed in rendering Ellis' cynicism and dark vision of those spoiled kids from CA. You should definitely see THE RULES OF ATTRACTION which is more faithful to the spirit of Ellis' works.

Probably the third best adaption...

A Customer from London, 16th March, 2010

unless you count zoolander (Glamorama). Not as terrible as I had read or expected, this is largely due to the principal cast, who I all found very engaging. The way it is shot i feel is also to its credit with thoughtful locations. The penultamate scene is heartbreaking. That said, its really not that good. Very average and I think only interesting for people who either are a)fans of the book and want to see what has been done with it, or b)fans of Robert Downey Jnr (who is excellent).

Good for Downie Jr fans - Weak for Brett Easton Ellis Films

Joey1 from , 21st September, 2009

If you are a fan of Robert Downie Jr it is a seminal film to watch because it is his break through and probably a good insight into the early drug problems that nearly ruined his career. If you are a fan of Ellis it simply doesn't work. The book deals with heavy topics but is as light as air and the film spends most of the time off script. The central characters decrepit lack of morality or sexual valor made the book a hit and Hollywood's unwillingness to take this on is why with the notable exception of American Psycho Ellis adaptations don't work on screen.

Less than Zero....?

A Customer from Timbuctu, 19th November, 2008

I really enjoyed this film when I was younger. I still enjoyed it this time except I thought it was a little ridiculous.....it is only 6 months after they finish high school that the rich kids realise that they can't cope and hit rock bottom. That's pretty lame. At least give it a year! It made me think that they were just spoilt and then I had no sympathy for them.
