Writer/director Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give, The Holiday) directs Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin in It's Complicated, a comedy about love, divorce and everything in between.

Jane (Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has-after a decade of divorce-an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin). But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son's college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable-an affair. With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell), Jane is now, of all things, the other woman.

Caught in the middle of their renewed romance is Adam (Martin), an architect hired to remodel Jane's kitchen. Healing from a divorce of his own, Adam starts to fall for Jane, but soon realizes he's become part of a love triangle. Should Jane and Jake move on with their lives, or is love truly lovelier the second time around? It's...complicated.

Fun, witty romcom

A Customer from Longstanton, 3rd January, 2010

This romcom has a rather dull title, which, if it hadn't been for free preview tickets, probably wouldn't have lured me to the cinema. It also included in the lead one of my less favoured actresses - Meryl Streep.

However, it turned out to be a well written and acted comedy that had many 'laugh out loud' moments - perfect for a Sunday evening.

Meryl Streep was very believable in the main role and played out a very realistic character in a film that wasn't full of the usual over-the-top Hollywood sentimentality. Alec Baldwin played her x-husband, having left her for the typical younger woman. Looking his age, and with a bit of a paunch, he pulled off a decent 'twinkle in the eye' lawyer. However, I found Steve Martin outshone him playing a rather more introspective character without any of the annoying characteristics of his more typical roles in e.g. Father of the Bride.

The surprise performance was from John Krasinski - someone i hadn't come across before - as a current boyfriend of one of their children - who delivered some great lines and helped the dynamic of the main storyline.

Overall this is a feelgood movie about life post-divorce and the changing dynamics and priorities pre- and post-divorce.

Grown up Rom Com!

A Customer from SW Londoin, 9th January, 2010

Streep does not disappoint in any role she undertakes.I really love the fact that she hasn't succumbed to the pressures of getting 'the windswept look' and is maturing really well, with alot of grace.I actually think this movie had a funny side to it. In my opinion it deconstructs the idea of how disposable older women seem to be treated by their foolish husbands in more affluent societies as they are replaced by younger versions of themselves. In this story, Baldwin plays the ex-husband who left his wife of 19 years (Streep) to marry a much younger woman. After 10 years he realised that perhaps he got himself a raw deal and starts eyeing up his ex wife. To cut a long story, they have an affair and when Baldwin leaves his current wife to get back together with his ex, not everything runs as smoothly as he expects. This movie is about more mature women claiming back their power, and as such is not really a comedy, but it certainly had many funny bits to boot! To me it just signalled that there are a breed of men that are so insecure that when they get older they need a younger woman by their side so they can feel reassured and not have the constant reminder that they are mortal. Frankly men like that do not deserve good women, because if they cannot value a good thing when they have it the only loser in the deal is the man. Streep's character in the movie realised that, and that is what made the movie very interesting to watch.

Frothy veneer, but watchable

I suppose it's quite an achievement to turn adultery, divorce, fertility and burgeoning relationships into an acceptably humurous format. I wouldn't call this a comedy, though. Solid performances from the Streepster, Baldwin and I think it was, Steve Martin; has he had some work done or what? It certainly looks like it to me and his physical apearance overshadows every scene that he's in. Anyway, you can watch this film probably once all the way through during the ironing or cleaning the house and won't miss much.

It's Boring

A Customer from North Notts, 12th February, 2010

Complicated it is not,nor funny, nor convincing. What a waste of a cinema trip! A good Rom-com has to either cause you to suspend disbelief,or you have to be covinced by the plot,or the characters. The most interesting thing in this movie is Steve Martin's botched face-lift,surely he could have afforded better!

It's Different

Gregor12 from , 1st February, 2010

Taken from a commonly used story line, the love triangle. Different to those usual younger people's movies involving teenage love stories, this tackles the older generation. On reflection if id have known the plot who was in it before seeing it I might have been less keen. However, it turned out to be witty and clever. Steve Martin plays a less in your face character to normal but includes his usual array of quips. The biggest surprise of the movie as far as I was concerned was that of John Krasinski's acting skills. He played a very funny and witty character that was integral to the story line. An easy watch and well worth it.
