Based on the graphic novel written by Alan Moore, Watchmen is a complex, multi-layered, mystery adventure which is directed by 300's Zack Snyder and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode and Patrick Wilson.

Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the 'Doomsday Clock' - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight.

When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...But who is watching the Watchmen?

The Director's cut of the feature is approximately 25 minutes longer, incorporating more elements from the graphic novel. This eagerly anticipated version offers more violence and reworked scenes with additional dialogue to give greater depth to this visual masterpiece. Also included are new commentary contributions from Director Zach Snyder and Graphic Novel illustrator Dave Gibbons.

Watchman

Gritty and visually striking, Watchmen is a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel, but its complex narrative structure may make it difficult for it to appeal to viewers not already familiar with the source material.

Probably True to the Comic

Caffreydog from , 25th January, 2010

This film, in line with many recent comic adaptations of late, is probably very true to the spirit of the original works. However coming to this direct the movie lacks some depth of definition to the characters and is in fact a little over long. Despite this it is an enjoyable watch and is a good example of the positives of the genre. For some reason the sound was poor with the vocals set too far back into the effcts though this could have been my machine / settings.

Not half bad

Bikeandy61 from , 25th January, 2010

Better than I imagined TBH. Like any novel difficult to do full justice to the written (and in this case drawn) page. As someone who is overly familiar with the source material I found myself at times being too analytical. I do wonder if an audience who don't know the original material will understand what is going on. Disappointed with Rorsach voice. The standard hero gruff voice. It is supposed to be monotone. Bit picky I know but would have separated it from the usual hero gruff speak. Give it a go, you may enjoy it.
