THE SOMETHING, SOMETHING, SOMETHING DARK SIDE is the sequel to BLUE HARVEST, a special 60 minute episode from cult cartoon franchise FAMILY GUY. Following the example of its predecessor, this instalment retraces the adventures of the STAR WARS saga from the bizarre perspective of Seth MacFarlanes dysfunctional characters. Chris Griffin the chubby and clumsy teenage son - is transformed into a less charming and not so resourceful Luke Skywalker, Stewie Griffin the ever menacing toddler - aptly morphs into an even meaner version of Darth Vader, while Peter Griffin and Lois Griffin play Han Solo and Princess Leia respectively.

Something funny, something not

I love Family Guy. So the idea of these iconic movies being re-tread by Peter, Quagmire, Stewie etc on paper sounds awesome. But I've been a little, sometimes a lot, dissapointed by their treatment of the material - which is ripe for piss-taking in nearly every scene. It's so easy to judge, and I know I couldn't do better - but it seems to me such a talented team could have gone further. Perhaps it was the ever watchful eye of Lucas and Fox that reigned in their writing, or perhaps it was there love for the source material that makes this so hit and miss. Sometimes funny, othertimes painfully unfunny and US-centric - jokes regarding old cartoons or ancient wrigley's commercials - seem out of place and more like fillers where no filler is needed surely. Scenes like the AT-AT attack are handled perfectly - albeit the baby AT-AT gag falls a little flat and a bit weird. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for pushing the envelope - but it seems to me they do it in odd places. Perhaps their tread of Jedi, critically the weakest of the original trilogy, will be harder and the gags tighter. But like the recent series of Family Guy I fear it'll be more miss than hit. Prove me wrong Seth, for the love of Vader prove me wrong!!!
