Director Edward Zwick's epic romance, set against the backdrop of WWI and the wide sky and rugged terrain of Montana, stars Anthony Hopkins as William Ludlow, an idealistic retired colonel who disapproves of the war and the army's indecent treatment of Native Americans. Abandoned by his blue-blooded wife, Ludlow raises his three sons in the remote foothills of Montana with the help of Native American friends. Before the war, Samuel (Henry Thomas) brings home his fiancee from the East Coast, Susannah (Julia Ormond), a stunning beauty who can ride, rope, and hunt like the Ludlow boys. When the war breaks out, Samuel, the youngest and most idealistic son, enlists in the army. Brothers Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Tristan (Brad Pitt) follow suit, more as protectors than as cohorts. Despite their best efforts, however, Samuel dies in battle. Upon returning home, Tristan becomes involved with Susannah, who is devastated by her loss but profoundly attracted to the brooding brother. However, tormented by his inability to save his little brother's life, Tristan abandons her and sets out on a long journey of self-discovery. During his absence, Alfred reveals his own passion for Susannah. Although she does not reciprocate his feelings, Susannah--who has despaired of ever seeing Tristan again--agrees to become his wife. Ultimately, Tristan does return, setting off a dangerous conflict between the brothers.

For someone who made his name on the small screen, Thirtysomething creator Edward Zwick certainly has the eye for the big picture when it comes to cinema. Glory, the moving story of a black regiment during the American Civil War, was suitably rousing, but it was with this fabulous throwback to the epic dramas of old that he really hits his stride. Anthony Hopkins plays stern patriarch William Ludlow, whose disgust at the actions of his own government during the Indian Wars leads him to bring up his three sons (Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn and Henry Thomas) on a remote ranch in the Montana mountains. However, their idyllic life is thrown into turmoil by outside events and by the arrival of the beautiful Julia Ormond. With a sweep that encompasses the passing of the Old West, the First World War, ivory hunting in Africa and Prohibition, this could have easily turned into a sprawling mess, but Zwick handles the various subplots with deceptive ease and fashions a poetic hymn to the values of loyalty and family ties, which only occasionally slips into melodramatic cliché. His skill in marshalling large casts is illustrated by the truly outstanding performances he draws from the talent on display: Hopkins is suitably craggy as the father, Pitt believably intense as the wayward middle son and Ormond delightfully unforced as the beauty who entrances the whole family. The real star, however, is John Toll's Oscar-winning cinematography, which is equally at home with the stunning beauty of the mountainous terrain and the killing fields of war-torn France.

GOOD FILM BUT NO CLASSIC

Derek Pearson from SADDLEWORTH, 7th June, 2005

STUNNING SCENERY, GOOD ACTING (WHEN HAS SIR ANTHONY EVER BEEN BAD?) BUT DON'T TRY READING TOO MUCH INTO IT, THE STORYLINE'S GOT MORE HOLES IN IT THAN A SIEVE, AND ANYWAY WHERE DID BRAD GET ALL THE 'HAIR PRODUCTS' FROM AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY. SUSPEND YOUR DISBELIEF FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS AND LET THE SCENERY AND PACING WASH OVER YOU, THERE ARE FAR WORSE WAYS TO SPEND AN EVENING

Powerful sweeping stirring period epic!

A Customer from Orpington, 18th February, 2010

Legends of the Fall is a great epic against the backdrop of the Great War. It is a story of brotherhood and fatherhood, and the relationship of the Rudwood father and his three boys, and the woman that changes their destinies forever. Edward Zwick weaves a grand story of war, love and jealousy. Brad Pitt gives a good performance, and proves that he's more than just the pretty boy that the tabloids love to talk about. And Anthony Hopkins is great as the firm but loving father figure, who has inner demons about the wars against the Indian nations as a young man. He really portrays a disillusioned man, and shows the anger at how a new sense of patriotism in his boys inspires them to fight in the Great War. What doubles the drama of the story is the tragedy in the family, and the three boys' struggle to win the heart of the one woman they all love. It is a great mixture of action and adventure, and drama and romance. Once you finish the film, it gets you thinking about the ideas of fate. Another great film by Edward Zwick, and if you loved Glory and Blood Diamond and The Siege and The Last Samurai, you'll love this film as well. Two thumbs up! Highly recommended.

This is the second time I've watched this film and it wont be the last. I feel it has everything from action to romance scenic shots and more. Zwicks casting could not have been better when he pairs Pitt with Hopkins, Aidan Quinn and the lovely Julia Ormond plus a few less familiar actors.I loved the way the Indian told the story, this gave it an almost mystical quality. The chain of events leading up to the end of the film was absolutely inspired and gave it an almost 6th sense like conclusion.

Legends of the Fall

Jammyhouse from , 4th October, 2009

I enjoyed this film - it's a study of how human frailtry can split a family apart, despite the fact that the love they all share never dies. We join them as three carefree young men who, rather than listen to their father, learn the important lessons in life the hard way and suffer the consequences of their mistakes. Set against a backdrop of beautiful scenery this is a film well worth watching.
