This kinetic horror/action hybrid stars Tak Sakaguchi as Prisoner KSC2-303, a criminal who has just escaped from a maximum security prison. Heading to the Forest of Resurrection to meet up with some gangsters, KSC2-303's escape plan soon veers off course when an argument with one of the gangsters leads KSC2-303 to shoot him. Worse still, KSC2-303 finds out the hard way that when you kill something in the Forest of Resurrection, it does not stay dead. Things get even more complicated when all the dead people the gangsters have buried in the forest begin coming back to life and packing heat. Blending zombie horror with EVIL DEAD 2 style slapstick and Hong Kong action pyrotechnics, VERSUS is a very bloody and very enjoyable thriller.

Mummy I'm wet.

thewacmc from London, 6th February, 2004

If ever I needed to write a list of reasons for being perpetually single, this film would be it. Zombies, guns, kung fu, gore, explosions, hammy overacting, eastern mysticism... it's everything you could want in a low buget movie filmed entirely in a forest. The script is minimal but effective and the acting ranges from deadpan to cartoon, but the whole thing is pulled off with such visual aplomb that you hardly care. Within minutes you'll be swept up in the carnage, which thankfully is not without a sense of humour. You must love this movie. Unless you're a girl. In which case, I hear Colin Firth has a new flick...

A new director on the block

Jim78 from from Tooting, 17th May, 2005

I knew nothing of this film when i first watched it except that it was Japanese, which is a cinema industry that i follow closely. Kitamura, the director, was an unknown when he made this film, which is why he shot it with an obvious low budget. It has since become a cult favourite as it involves zombies and a high level of violence, all of which are played for laughs and action. If you take the time to watch this film, then i urge you to also see his second feature Azumi. Then I suggest you keep a close eye open for the film he is currently working on; GODZILLA. This should be the real deal rather than the hollywood nonsense that came out a few years ago.

Repetative Fights, No Story

SmearCampaign from from Salford, UK, 17th June, 2004

Versus is a very difficult story to understand from the film, let alone summarise in a review. Two prisoners escape from a maximum security prison and engage in one fight after another throughout the entire film.

The setting is an area of woodland where the dead come back to life as zombies almost as soon as they're killed. There are some minor ironic sub-plots which this provides.

The makeup effects are excellent; far superior than The Passion of Christ for example, for those who've seen it. There is very little story but a thread of humour and a 'goodies vs baddies' theme make the film watchable.

If you want a 21st Century Bruce Lee film with a bit of sci-fi and more gore than a failing NHS trust operating room, you'll thoroughly enjoy this film.

Manga Live

Ah Kitamurasan you are cheesily wonderful! This is one of my all time faves. More like a manga style movie, just imagine the characters are animated then you'd get it. It's not translated well enough so I can understand why some people thought it was a bit naff. It's a classic. Zombies, swords, guns. What more can you ask for? 9.5/10

Incredible.

A Customer from Ashford, 18th January, 2010

If you really don't care about the script, the acting or a completely sane cast and you just want to laugh your head off then this is perfect. Hilarious twist too

Versus.

joliver1 from , 9th November, 2009

I enjoy martial arts movies generally speaking, however I cannot recommend 'Versus'.When I watch this type of film I usually put my plot and acting expectations on hold,it's the fighting and action I want to see!and there is much to see in this film, unfortunately most of it is er....average is the kindest way I can put it.It's not that it's bad, just not very interesting or entertaining.Mildly disappointing would sum up this film for me.

Brilliant fun!

Totsnonna from , 21st October, 2009

If you're a fan of the Evil Dead films and like black humour with your gore and gorgeous Asian guys in black leather – then you've come to the right place. None of the characters have names, and you probably won't know what's going on for the first hour – but who cares? Sit back and enjoy two hours of crazy fun! Excellent :)
