A deluxe version of Agatha Christie's favourite mystery story, published in 1937, and a thematic follow-up to her Murder on the Orient Express. Set aboard a steamship cruising down the Nile, an extremely unpopular heiress is murdered and everyone on the ship is suspect. The passengers include the eminent detective Hercule Poirot (Ustinov), who cuts short his vacation in order to solve the mystery. The cast features the cream of '70s Hollywood and even includes classic-era stars Davis and Niven.

The biggest mystery here is how director John Guillermin managed to take a splendid Agatha Christie novel, some stunning scenery and a stellar cast and produce such a disappointing film. Admittedly, setting the scene and establishing the characters is a vital part of any whodunnit. But the only thing fatal about this picture's first half is its pace. Peter Ustinov clearly enjoys his first outing as the fastidious Belgian super-sleuth Hercule Poirot, and there's some delicious overplaying by Maggie Smith and Angela Lansbury. Yet David Niven and Bette Davis are wasted, and George Kennedy and Lois Chiles are simply dreadful.

A pleasant thirties atmosphere and the travel poster backgrounds are the chief assets of this rather hesitant whodunnit which plays fair enough with the audience but gives its popular cast too little to do, while its constant repetitions of the crime beco

There is no de-Nile, this is wonderful

Hugely entertaining film packed with great performances by iconic actors - Ustinov, Davis, Maggie Smith, David Niven, Angela Lansbury, Mia Farrow... on a gorgeous boat with spectacular backdrops. The pace is good and the twist is also terrific and surprising. Great fun.

Heiress Lynnet Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) is shot aboard the Karnak steamer, whilst honneymooning down the Nile with her new husband Simon Doyle (Simon MacCorkindale). Simon's recently-jilted fiancee (Mia Farrow) is the chief suspect & Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) & old time friend Colonel Race (David Niven) have the job of working out who the killer (or killers) are.

A sumptuous, beautifully shot movie is filled with a glittering array of 70's & classic era stars. Added to the above are Jon Finch, Jack Warden, George Kennedy, Jane Birkin, Olivia Hussey & Angela Lansbury. But best of all are Bette Davis & Maggie Smith, who spit venom at each other in a couple of memorable scenes.

I loved this movie. The cast ham it up just enough & a little campery is always required of in any classic Christie novel. The pacing is just right & we are given alot of background before the first killing. Add to this, the fact that the movie was shot entirely on location & this makes for a brilliant whodunnit. Second only to Murder on the Orient Express. A 25 minute 'making of' feature (that was made at the time of the movie, with Ustinov & Birkin interviewed) make this a dvd worth watching.

Absolutely Fabulous! Stunning Senery, a clever who dunnit, with a twist at the end, a stellar cast what more could you want for a fine piece of nostalgic cinema at its very best! The best bits for me were the legend that was Bette Davis and Maggie Smith and the bile they spat at each other, it was acting at its finest the late great David Niven who added class to anything he appeared in and had such an effortless ability, he was simply a joy to watch, a very young Mia Farrow and of course the late Peter Ustinov, as the one and only Hercule 'I'm Belgian, not French' Poirot. Ok the blood was rather orangy rather than red but this was the 1970's and everything else more than made up for it. Highly recommended!

A class act

Moorah from , 19th January, 2010

After reading some of the critic's reviews, I fealt compelled to write a small review in defence. It's Agatha Christie. Half of the fun is getting to know the characters, before the murders begin. This way, the viewer can then have fun in trying to find the murderer for themselves, with backrounds to the characters and possible motives in place. Skating over the introduction to the characters would be robbing the viewer of their enjoyment in piecing together the clues for themselves. Great actors, great scenery and locations and a great story all add up to a must see Agatha Christie whodunnit. Peter Ustinov is fantastic as Poirot, a role I think he was born to play. This and 'Evil under the sun' are, I think, the best adaptions to the big screen. I know that some may argue that 'Murder on the Orient Express' is the greatest adaption, with Albert Finney doing a great job as the famous detective. I, however, enjoy the slightly more comical, and at times, jolly slant Ustinov provides. The costume designs, which won costume designer Anthony Powell an Oscar and a Bafta, are absolutely perfect, and really helps give the period of the movie real weight. A real tribute to the established, as well as the more comical, fashions of the time. Finally, the music in this movie is terrific. A real sense of grandeur and suspense is portrayed through the use, and sometimes the absence, of the score. Unlike the Michael Winner movie 'Appointment with death' which is a great story, beatiful locations and, again, great actors, but totally spoilt by the cheesy 80's score. 'Death on the Nile' gets it just about spot on. Overall, 'Death on the Nile' is a real class act, which should have its parts savoured, and the finished product admired.

A very enjoyable film, but then few stories can beat an Agatha Christie murder mystery. Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury and Maggie Smith were wonderful, of course.

Death-tastically Superb

jockaholic from , 23rd February, 2009

I'm 34 year old male and from east end of Glasgow born and bred, I should hate these movies (sterotypically - I should love senseless skull bashing & drinking oh & Football or 'fitba') but thank god & bette davis I am no stereotype in that way. I love this film I have watched it since I was a young child: the drama, the intrigue, the music, breathtaking scenery, the stars so many to choose from...reminds me of my childhood days sitting with family loving this performance from start to finish agog at the wonder of it all and so happy.. ..I am glad to say this movie all of it's star's & the wonder of Agatha Christie are in my collection and whenever I feel sad or sick or an unexpected day off work!! , or there's nothing to watch on 'the box' I put this on & I feel renewed :) Sir Peter Ustinov what a man! He is dead now & I am jealous of the man, his zest for life, the people he met, his knowledge & the stories that came with it, surely one of the world's greatest thinker's, protagonist's & Actor's. If more so a fanatastic represnentation of man/humanity gem of a man if ever there was & one that we should all aspire to be :) I admire the man greatly as should we all man, woman, prime minister and president alike..
