Jean Rollin, the French auteur who shocked and delighted audiences during the 1970s with his wildly gothic and erotic vampire films, returns to that style in THE FIANCEE OF DRACULA. In it, a professor and his assistant enter a parallel universe while searching for the remains of Count Dracula, where they encounter such garish and sensual beings as an ogress who devours babies, a jester and his vampire lover, and the scarlet She-Wolf. Desperate to escape this ghoulish dimension, the professor finds himself in a showdown with the beautiful Isabelle, who is possessed by an evil force, that will decide his fate.

Howls of laughter not horror

philjb from , 14th October, 2009

French films are like their restaurants, best in the world when they are good but dire when they aren’t. This film unfortunately falls firmly into the latter category. I am still unsure if I was watching a spoof horror made in a weekend by a bunch of GCSE media studies students. The whole film was disjointed and appeared to be a series of sub-plots joined together. Careful editing and filmography was non-existent with jumps replacing any fluidity between scenes. Dialogue was stilted and acting so wooden that a forest somewhere was being deprived of a numbers of trees. As for the horror element, this was pretty non-existent with audience shocks more likely being replaced by howls of laughter. Nobody would expect a film filled with vampires, dwarfs, ogres and zombies to be real-life credible but at some point there has to be some element of plausibility and this film clearly lacked that due to a poorly written script and the limited ability of the director and actors. The story itself was the biggest failure as it attempted to do too much in too short time and ended up being more of a parody than a good evening’s entertainment. I won’t say this is the worst file I have ever seen but its amateur style made it not far off. It certainly made me pine for the classic Hammer films of the past and as for director Jean Rollin; he makes Russ Meyer look like a genius.

Comic.

Just the selection of bizarre characters are worth the watch. This is by no means a good horror flick, or even a good exploitation movie, but it is funny. If you like weird, then this shouldn't disappoint. The locations are interesting, some of which have been visited in earlier Rollin films.
