From all outward appearances, Pippa Lee leads a charmed existence. She is the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher 30 years her senior, the proud mother of two grown children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. But as Pippa dutifully follows her husband to a new life in a staid Connecticut retirement community, her idyllic world and the persona she has built over the course of her marriage will be put to the ultimate test. In truth, looks are deceiving, and this picture-perfect woman has seen more than her fair share of turmoil in her youth.

Brilliant

A Customer from Bristol, 7th November, 2009

For me the examination of the many roles one woman can play in the lives of the characters on display was highly entertaining. It was both harrowing and hilarious. I loved it. Definitely not arty-farty in my opinion.

Thoughtful,moving drama

A Customer from SW London, 7th November, 2009

I really enjoyed watching this film: it was full of surprises and insights. Pippa starts out life with a mother who is hooked on pills, and the relationship is strained, to the point that Pippa can no longer take her mother's addiction and leaves the family home. After experimenting with sex and drugs who meets a publisher who is much older than her, but I guess she sees in him the parent figure she never had and a chance at redemption and starting life over. For him the attentions of a younger, beautiful woman become irresistible especially since he is already married. His then wife kills herself and this is greater incentive for Pippa to do right by her lover and after marrying him and having children, she feels she has done good. After several years of marriage she starts fearing the inevitable: her husband's death and he looks to another woman to make him feel young again. With the death of her husband and the relationship she has built with her unlikely neighbour (Reeves), her life takes a surprising, interesting turn. This movie was well cast, and a real treat for anyone who loves dramas.

Halfway there

A Customer from Luton, 9th November, 2009

I've rented The Private Lives of Pippa Lee on the basis of recommendation from a friend, being excited about the portrayal of relationships and human depth in the movie. However, I'm slightly disappointed by the seeming loss of the content and story lines along the run of the movie. Some of the ideas are built upon and some fade away. However, it is a good Thursday evening movie, suitable for after movie discussion.

don't waste your time

A Customer from London, 9th March, 2010

It's the story of a woman who once was younger and did a few things she regrets a little. That's as exciting and original as the plot gets. The middle-class-well-read-but-dysfunctional people that make up the supporting cast are 2 dimensional clichés who are so painfully plucked from a bumper book of high brow characters they spout cod psychological clap trap without even the merest hint of irony. Oh, it might get better after 45 minutes but my DVD player got too bored to keep spinning the disc and ejected it in disgust. Perhaps it's all dream? Or maybe she's really her own brother? Or perhaps it was too many minutes of my life wasted sitting in front of this drivel. I give it 5 stars.

A subtle and rewarding film

Tomcat from from London, 4th March, 2010

A quiet and unassuming outsider, the film is rather like the character it portrays, engaging yet subtle and mysterious. I'm not surprised that some reviewers find it slow and disjointed and you have to be patient and observant to get the most out of this it. My advice is stick with it unless you like high drama, thrillers or whizz-bang movies! I'm still thinking about this film a week after I saw it.

A decent adaptation

A Customer from Surrey, England, 24th February, 2010

The book having been written by Rebecca Miller and the film directed by her, I was obviously expecting a film that a colourful, emotional and true as the book. However I was quite disappointed to find that at a concise running time of just over 90 minutes, some of the main themes and the events of the book were rarely given justice on the screen and had little time to be explored; Pippa's relationship with her teacher for instance. Whilst the cinematography, editing and acting are all particularly beautiful and visually pleasing; I can't get over the disappointment at how condensed it felt. It was by all means a 'good' film, but if you haven't read the book; it feels a bit pointless, while if you have read the book; expect to be underwhelmed...
