Sterling performance as always from the fantsastic Mr Hardy as an intense, raw Heathcliffe. Previous adaptations of Wuthering Heights seem brittle compared to this tour de force. A must for all period drama lovers.

Terrible Heathcliff

A Customer from London, 9th September, 2009

I can't believe anyone thought Hardy was good in this. He was totally one-dimensional and painful to watch (and how about his all-over-the-place accent/voice? Every time he opened his mouth, I had flashbacks of Alan Partrige singing the Kate Bush song). There was no sense of his love for Cathy at all, or his inner torment and his desire to belong. All you got was the bullying, unpleasant and cruel side of his personality- it made Cathy's obsession with him completely unplausible and as a result she also came across as brittle and annoying. The rest of the cast (Sarah Lancashire and Andrew Lincoln) delivered some solid performances (if miscast- I'm pretty sure Edgar is not meant to be sexier than Heathcliff!) but that was not enough by any means. HUGE disappointment.

Crikey, this was diabolical

MoggyMania from , 31st August, 2009

Maybe it is unfair to review something that I was unable to watch entirely, but after 10 minutes or so it just had to be switched off. Although I am a huge fan of the book and have read it many times, and thoroughly enjoy the Ralph Fiennes/Juliet Binoche version of the film, this was so appalling that I have had to submit my first-ever review - the acting was terrible, the accents dreadful (and I'm from Yorkshire so I should know!) and it bore little resemblance to the book. Worst adaptation since the new Brideshead Revisited! What were they thinking of? Heathcliff had all the charisma of a tramp. Although I am not averse to new adaptations, and infact prefer the new Pride and Prejudice to the original (Colin Firth is brilliant, it has to be said), this one should be given a miss by any Bronte Fans out there. The latest Jane Eyre adaptation is fantastic and I was hoping this was going to be of a similar quality, but I was very disappointed as you have probably guessed!

Brilliant

A Customer from Telford, 1st September, 2009

I am still amazed at how good Tom Hardy was as Heathcliff. The best I've ever seen. Really haunting and memorable. The whole adaptation - though sorrowfully not enough like the book - was unmissable and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

a must for any romantic !

A Customer from Cumbria, 1st March, 2010

this is my favourite version of Wuthering Heights, wonderful romance with a twist... dont forget it is based on a novel published in 1847.... beautiful scenery throughout the movie, rags to riches, poverty and separation of the classes. Heathcliff is quite scary to say the least, but revenge is sweet!!!!

A Different Approach to an Old Story...

A Customer from Pershore, 27th February, 2010

I've read some of the negative reviews that this movie has been given; and to my mind, given quite unfairly. I think Coky Giedroyc has given an old story a new lease of life. Let's face it, there have been so many variations of this particular Bronte story that, if they were all the same there would be no point making another. Tom Hardy plays a good 'Heathcliffe'...but in a totally different way to others. Indeed, I felt this move was quite refreshing. The film has been shot very well and has a strong cast. If it is period drama that you like then this is worth viewing. A final note; the guy who gave up on the movie after 10 minutes should have stayed with it a little longer.

Fantastic adaptation!

A Customer from Aylesbury, 18th December, 2009

This adaptation captures the darker side of Heathcliff, the brutality within the story as well as the love story between Healthcliff and Cathy, and manages to knit together the two parts of the book extremely well. I thoroughly 'Wuthering Heights' and would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys costume drama, or Emily Bronte's novel.

If adaptation is neccessary, at least do it properly

A Customer from Cheshire, 17th November, 2009

Very disappointed particularly by the ending. He didn't shoot himself! He went on hunger strike and willed himself to die over a number of years. At the time of writing, suicides couldn't be buried near loved ones and the whole point was that he wanted to wander the moors with Cathy in the afterlife. His death was symbolic of his heartbreak and pain, so this ending was totally inaccurate and false in relation to the book.Fiennes/Binoche version was much better
