Nearly everyone spends their life surrounded by the work of industrial designers, but very few people understand the process by which your furniture, mobile phone, or alarm clock came to look and feel the way they do, and how the elements of design interact with our own ideas and assumptions about value and functionality. The design of everyday objects has more than a little to do with mass psychology and the way it intersects with commerce, even if most people never give the process a moment's thought. Filmmaker Gary Hustwit (HELVETICA) takes viewers on a journey through the elusive world of industrial design and the interaction of people with the objects they've brought into their lives in the documentary OBJECTIFIED, which features interviews with a number of major designers who discuss how products move from the drawing board to the marketplace, and the philosophy behind the look, feel, and function of the things in your home. OBJECTIFIED received its world premiere at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival.

One for geeks

Not on my list but sent twice anyway. If you like to see how objects such as chairs are made then is for you. Good for engineers or analysts.

Design Design - beautifully creative

A Customer from Coventry, 11th December, 2009

If you have any interest in design, then this is a 'must see'. Behind the scenes and current thinking are highlighted. The extras really added more. And it was so fascinating to see the designers - how they dressed and the background, so colour sensitive

objectionably flat

iloobia from , 18th January, 2010

Perhaps as a very long and slick corporate video or learning aid to design students this has some merits but as far as cinema goes, this made me feel like I had been battered with a dull stick. Almost offensively flat, the film never strayed outside its safety zone and I felt hope or enlightenment leaking from my every pore as I watched, bored stupid. There was no revelation here, simply the blatantly obvious wrapped up as self important vocal vomit. And I loved his last film, Helvetica. Shame really. I would rather watch a film about refuse collectors telling us about the craft and merits of their trade rather than this self congratulatory, sterile dross.
