Based on a story by author Ryne Douglas Pearson, KNOWING is a moody sci-fi thriller starring Nicolas Cage as John Koestler, a widowed MIT astrophysicist who lives in wooded seclusion with his young son, Caleb (Chandler Canterbury). When Caleb is handed an envelope unearthed from a school time capsule buried 50 years earlier, its cryptic numerical sequence captures the interest of his dad, who soon realises the powerful significance of the document, which seems to predict major world disasters throughout history. Unfortunately, there are three calamities that have yet to unfold, and John, aided reluctantly by single mother Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne) and her daughter, Abby (Lara Robinson), must try to unravel the mystery of the numbers before many more lives are lost.

Alex Proyas's follow-up to 2004's I, ROBOT, returns to the shadowy atmosphere of the director's revered cult film, DARK CITY, while staying within the realm of the Hollywood big-budget disaster movie. Though the plot takes some outlandish turns, the film is grounded by solid performances from Cage, Byrne, and the impressive child actors, and Proyas further anchors the proceedings in moments of captivatingly bleak realism. Like the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, KNOWING is a pensive and melancholy thriller that rewards discerning viewers willing to follow its strange and intriguing tale.

Surprisingly brilliant

I really enjoyed this film. After reading mixed reviews I thought I'd take a gamble on this film and wasn't disappointed. The film started off excellantly and if the ending of the film had been a lot better then I'd rated it 5 stars. The basic premise is that an American primary school buried a 'time capsure' in 1959. This basically comprised of the every pupil individually drawing a picture of what the World would be like in 50 years time. A 'strange' girl drew a load of numbers. Fifty years later the time capsule was opened. Each pupil received one drawing from one of the pupils from 1959. Co-incidently the school brain-box, whose father was equally as brainy, received a copy of the strange girls numbers. The rest of the film was spent trying to work out what the hundreds of numbers meant, and trying to stop world disasters. The film reminded me a little of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and really comes very highly recommended. Apart from the ending I could not fault any element of this film.

Not bad

A reasonable paced film and worth watching. Just a shame Nick Cage is such a dreadful actor. Get past that and you'll enjoy it.

Just OK

I know there was quite a lot of hype connected to this film and it went to number one in the states so I expected a lot. However it was a bit disappointed. The acting wds wooden and the story a bit far fected. It did have good special effects going for it though so if effects are the thing you want most from a film rather than story this could be for you.
