A remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic of the same name, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL follows astrobiologist Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) as she is unceremoniously plucked from her everyday life with her stepson (Jaden Smith), and whisked away to consult the government on a top-secret matter. That matter happens to be the arrival of a massive glowing sphere in Central Park, accompanied by a towering robot-like protector dubbed Gort and an alien ambassador named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), who takes up human form to communicate with the people of Earth. When Klaatu finds himself faced with hawkish, uncompromising officials, he goes on the run with Benson and her son as the fate of the world gradually becomes clear.

A Classic Disappointment

RCotty from , 23rd April, 2009

The original title had to be mentioned in any review of this film. As afterall it is little more than a remake. Unfortunately todays film making technology should be able, in the right hands, to take one of the best sci-fi movies of all time and modernise it to its full potential. However this movie fails to pick up the pace, and leaves you unsatisfied by the end credits. GORT is by the far the main on-screen attraction and its appearances on screen are few and far between. Only appearing 3 times throughout the movies 100 minute running time. Barely pulling off much of a presence at the futile and brainless attempts of the united states government to contain and cooperate with the deep space visitors. Throughout the movie you realise that the entire story is a cliche of envionmental warnings and military mis-haps. Further let down by the shallow and half-hearted cast members. Reeves gives a solid performance although comfortably close to most of his recent roles as an actor. The only thing that keeps you watching this movie is Connelly's acting performance, as she has proven before she can be the spotlight of an essentially pace-lacking movie such as this one. It's just a shame that the modern re-make of this title has lost its opportunity to capitolise on the promise that undoubtedly persuaded 20th Century Fox to fund it. One of the only great things about this blu-ray title is that the high-def transfer is a solid and polished one. The visuals are up to and beyond todays standard especially at the scenes of the GORT and the mysterious globes that are dotted around the earth. And the DTS 5.1 sound track gives precise and sharp audio to fit the detailed picture. Most noticeably in the all too rare action scenes. But the places where these aspects shine are interrupted in almost every case by the side-cast members who represent the government officials, that almost seem to have been pulled off the street. After all is said and done. The movie feels rushed. The acting lacks passion and drive. And the plot tries to reinvent itself for the modern day world but all together brings nothing new or exciting to the sci-fi genre. Something that couldnt be in any higher contrast to the original that basically invented it.
