It’s the film that critics are hailing as Woody Allan’s return to form. Vicky Cristina Barcelona has become one of the most talked about movies of the year. A sizzling, erotically charged, relentlessly hilarious and touching romantic comedy that won Penelope Cruz (Volver, Vanilla Sky) a Best Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role Oscar ® for her dazzling portrayal of the volatile Maria. Also starring Scarlett Johansen (Lost In Translation), Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) and Rebecca Hall (Frost/Nixon). Our story begins in the picturesque surroundings of Barcelona where two American girls are about to find out that they have a lot more in common than they first anticipated. Vicky is a practical, studious and engaged. Cristina on the other hand is reckless, adventurous and recovering from a failed relationship. Both of them are about to have their worlds turned upside down by an infamous, bohemian artist called Juan and his psychotic ex-wife.

DP Javier Aguirresarobe makes locations and actors alike charming and delightful, bathing everything in a handsome, sun-glazed glow....[There are] glimmers of Allen's old confidence

Brilliant

iTrackday from , 24th February, 2010

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is my favourite type of film, it is one of those that lingers with you, a film whose characters you find yourself thinking about weeks after you watched it. After a first saw it I gave it a respectable 4 stars but now a month or so after seeing the film I have returned to give it 5 stars. Now this won't be everybody's cup of tea but if you want to see great actors obviously enjoying a great script then give it a try - if only for Scarlett and Penelope.

Easy Watching

Not a fabulous film, but easy watching with a bottle of wine. Good insight into relationships and how they can change. Bit of a girlie film, but enjoyable all the same.

"As he typed the review he couldn't help but feel he was annoying himself"

Kinobick from , 22nd December, 2009

This film has possibly the most annoying voice over of all time. At first I thought it was a joke that was going to stop, but it never stopped. It kept on going and going narrrating every tiny detail. I think if there was a scene in this film where Vicky takes a dump he would have actually explained to you what kind of poo it was and what it looked like. He sounds like Kelsey Grammer from Fraiser, imagine him narrating your life for two hours, you would end up throwing yourself from a bridge and he would narrate it for you, all the way down until your nose smashed through the back of your skull. Saying that though, the film isn't bad, i'm not a huge Woody Allen fan and can't compare it to any of his older work but it's entertaining and Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruise are enjoyable to watch.

Stay with it

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed it. The story develops quite slowly and the film has an arty feel about the way its made (as well as the content), but with such a beautiful setting for it, gorgeous people and a sexy storyline - what's not to like.
