"Tokyo Sonata" is a portrait of a seemingly ordinary Japanese family. The father who abruptly loses his job conceals the truth from his family; the eldest son in college hardly returns home; the youngest son furtively takes piano lessons without telling his parents; and the mother, who knows deep down that her role is to keep the family together, cannot find the will to do so. From the exterior, all is normal and the same. But, somehow, a single, unforeseeable chasm has appeared within the family, only to spread ever so quietly and quickly to disintegrate them.

Enchanting sonata

Tachikoma from , 9th February, 2010

Tokyo Sonata is an intriguing mix of esoteric culture, manic depression, and inferiority complexes stretched out to span this nigh-on magical film. It follows a family caught up in their own world, struggling to hold it together. Inevitably, the family discintegrates, impacting everyone. The Tokyo sonata played in the film is a truly mesmerising, enchanting piece that is wonderfully played and serves as a tie to hold the film together. If you like pseudo 'documentaries' that reveal a lot about culture, family, and traditional values, this is for you. Highly recommended and wonderful to watch throughout.

Contain Nationalistic and Political Views

The Owl from West London, 29th September, 2009

This film begins by blaming a foreigner for stealing jobs from Japanese nationals. Then, Repeatedly, it mentions that USA is sending only a portion of their own troop to Middle East while all Japanese who enlisted to fight alongside USA are 100% deployed to the war zones. It also questions Japan's tie with USA a couple of times.
