The story of a deep friendship, lasting from childhood to beyond death, between two very different women--Bette Midler plays C.C. Bloom, a poor but ambitious Jewish girl from the Bronx who goes on to become a famous Broadway star, and Barbara Hershey plays Hillary, an attractive WASP from a wealthy San Francisco family who starts out with all the advantages in life yet manages to find nothing but disappointment. As they lead their separate lives, they come to realise and later rely on the strength that their friendship provides.

Radio Times

A movie about a lifetime friendship between two women makes a refreshing change, especially when it stars powerhouse Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. They both make the most of their roles as two girls from completely different backgrounds who meet as 11-year-olds and, despite various setbacks, remain friends over the years. Pretty Woman's Garry Marshall directs slickly and Hershey is very appealing as a poor little rich girl, but the movie belongs to the astonishing Midler, playing a brash, selfish singer. This drama is at its best when Midler gives free rein to her character rather than when it slips into schmaltz.

Halliwell's Film Guide

In another age, this sentimental feminist weepie would have been classified as a woman's picture, though Midler's singing gives it a wider appeal.

ohhhhhh wow!!!

I saw this and had to review it!! Rent it, buy it, get really drunk on a weekend and sob your poor little heart out to it! Yes it's cheesy, yes she's really, really ginger, but the film is amazing. It's one of those films that gay guys love, girls cry at and straight guys pretend not to like. At the very least it's worth a rent! I might watch it now actually!!!! yay!!!!

Sad Film

A Customer from Kent, 27th August, 2005

It is about 2 friends who have an up and down relationship. One of them has a daughter. Towards the end one becomes ill and from there on it gets worse. Very sad film - it made me cry and I'm a 36 year old man. 4 stars for making me cry, not many films can manage that.

A Made-for-TV Tear-Jerker

BigMeUp from , 9th November, 2009

If this film wasn't made for TV, then I apologise, but it certainly watches as if it were, which is not to disparage the film in anyway. It's just that the subject matter, and the manner of filming inevitably remind one of a TV movie. Anyway, the film is an uplifting account of friendship, expectations and bitter reality. The main characters are fully developed, and Bette Midler's C.C. Bloom is easily likeable, although (as C.C.'s mother says in the film) she does tend to wear you out, after a bit. The film holds no plot twists or surprises. You know exactly what's going to happen to whom in about 20 minutes, but you willingly go along for the ride because by that time, you've come to care about the two mismatched friends. The film is not without its faults - apart from the two main protagonists, everyone else is drawn in caricature, for instance - but these should not overly detract from general enjoyment of the film. Do have a hankie or two about, though.

A true tear jerker film. Great story, refreshingly original despite its age. Felt that it could be about 40 minutes shorter though.
