hardly a horror

Rustyfilms from , 28th May, 2009

I rented this film as it came under the horror section when browsing for my usual genre, and came across this, as stated under the title, on the dvd and everywhere where it can be crammed in ; A film by Ann Turner. Already sent the film back but haven't forgotten it. Set in 1950's Australia, it tells the story of a 9 year old girl called 'Celia' growing up amongst communism, rabbits and bad behaviour. The film, by Ann Turner, tries to cover many a genre, with about 30 seconds (and that's generous) of horror throughout the whole thing. Although not a horror film and not what I was looking for, I can't slate it as it's actually an OK film and the actress playing 'Celia' is pretty good. If you're looking for drama, and an OK film with decent acting, then you might really enjoy it. However, if you're looking for a horror film and expecting possessed children and outbursts of unholy rage, really, really don't bother.

A good social study

Dungbeetle from , 27th January, 2010

Life in 1958 Victoria Australia as seen through the eyes of a nine year old girl and her friends. In between playing with friends and battling a rival gang Celia sees the adults worry about evil communists and the massive rabbit population of Victoria. Her pet rabbit is subject to a government ban. This is a very good portrayal of the Australian attitudes at the time and the central cast play it well.

Disappointing

EYAC from , 22nd October, 2009

The description of this film is misleading - it is not at all chilling or imaginitive. I am open-minded and watch a lot of different genred films but would recommend you don't bother with this one. It's pants.

Heavenly Creatures meets Lord of the Flies

Noseyjoe from , 23rd September, 2009

More to this than meets the eye: starts off apparently happy families but their dark secrets slowly emerge, and in particular the effect on their nine year-old daughter, superbly played. Childhood is beautifully evoked, occasionally with a new spin which makes you laugh out loud and remember the cruel games you engaged in sometimes. Her fantasy life is rich; at times you think it is going to take over. And tragically it does, in one 'moment of madness' near the end. Just when you think she's back on the rails, the ending leaves you apprehensive...
