Time Out

Dont expect anything too radical from this infuriatingly soft yet still pleasantly subdued and poignant screen...

Victorian dilemma

crumblie from , 29th September, 2009

This film is a mix of scientific discovery and personal tradgedy and is imbued with victorian views and principles! It explores Darwins dilemma in that publishing his theory he goes against God and his wife a devout Christian! It is almost as though he is being punished in his personal life for his beliefs! A must see film if a little long and with too many agonised close ups of Darwins face for my liking!Fine acting throughout and wonderful photography.

What a waste of an idea

Benhuczek from , 8th January, 2010

That it's Charles Darwin and family etc. is totally irrelevant. This is basically a story about a man's attempt to come to terms with the death of his daughter and dealing with the fallout that spills into the rest of the family. It's a story that could be set anywhere, any time. I reckon the Darwin bit was just so the crew could have a bit of jolly somewhere hot. Deathly dull movie.

Achingly slow, occasionally beautiful

thistimeitwillbedifferent from , 26th January, 2010

Suffers from an extremely slow pace and more often than not feels like a TV feature, Creation is none the less a well-produced family drama which just so happens to focus on the Darwins. Martha West's Annie is both a highlight and a distraction, occasionally threatening to impinge on what the film sets out to examine; namely the production of Charles' theories. Can never be criticised for being lightweight but for some this will be as much criticism as praise.

All things to all people?

A Customer from Bristol, 24th January, 2010

This film consistently hedges its bets on the Evolution issue to put bums on seats. What we end up with is a well-acted high Victorian melodrama complete with madness and ghosts. Nothing wrong with that, except that the subject matter here -- Darwin's Theory of Evolution -- is a highly charged and contested issue to this day, linked to a minefield of crucially debated areas upon which the well-being of our society hinges. The writers/director tried to be all things to all people, blew it on the ideas/clarity front, and played into the hands of people who don't believe in Evolution. You can see this in the Special Features on the DVD: the film has been hijacked by Christian anti-Darwinists trying to get the public to believe that Darwin got it wrong. The special features are made by a company called 'Damaris' -- a Christian organisation. I am a Christian myself, but I'm not happy about backdoor proselytizing. Had the writers and director had their wits about them and made a clear intelligent film, something like this could never have happened.

Good Family Film....

Minny from , 16th March, 2010

There is alot of talent in this film not least of which are Paul Bettany and his beautiful wife Jennifer Connelly. They work brilliantly together and are both fine actors. There are some good supporting roles too. For me, this film is ideal for family viewing and it is an interesting portrayal of Darwin. It is one of those films that I am sure will end up on tv. It has a Disney feel about it. I hope that Paul and Jennifer do more work together - maybe with a bit more grit as they are slighly wasted in this.

Not being an expert on Charles Darwin I wasn't quite sure what to expect but this film was a wonderful insight into his life and the personal tragedy that he endured when he lost his beloved daughter. The personal battle he had to publish his book The Origin of Species - his fight with himself between religion and science. I thought this was a beautifully portrayed film and Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly were amazing as husband and wife. Thoroughly enjoyed it and came away having learnt something too.
