Petulant, rich honeypie Celine and scruffily adorable janitor Robert find themselves on the road to romance after he kidnaps her to avenge his termination at the hands of her callous father. But what they don't realize is that their love is celestially predetermined, as a pair of gun-toting angels gives chase to force the issue. A quixotic and inconsistent Hollywood debut from the production team of director Boyle, writer John Hodge, and producer Andrew MacDonald ("Shallow Grave" and "Trainspotting").

Radio Times

This must count as third time unlucky for the production team behind British mega-hits Shallow Grave and Trainspotting. Desperate to regain his menial job in a giant American corporation, Ewan McGregor kidnaps his former boss's daughter, rich bitch Cameron Diaz. As the two go on the run, a pair of angels (miscast Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo) embark on a quest to make the unlikely duo fall in love. This fantasy-tinged romantic road movie comes unstuck as the feel-good factor is cranked up. McGregor and Diaz may be on fine form, but this will undoubtedly be a letdown for fans of director Danny Boyle.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A surreal romantic comedy where fantasy and reality fail to cohere into a satisfactory whole.

Watch! Watch! Watch!

I first saw this movie several years ago, I rented it without knowing much about it and was really impressed with it. It's funny and quirky, if you like that kind of thing then you'll love this movie. It has a great soundtrack (Ash, Oasis), a top class cast (Holly Hunter, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo, Ian Holm) and a story that with more twists than a slinky.

I really recommend giving it a try.

Ewan McGregor is perfect as Robert, the janitor about to be replaced by a robot who kidnaps the boss' daughter (Diaz) to make a stand about it - only he doesn't really know what to do once he's got her, so she has to run the whole event. Along with that, the Angels are trying to make life on earth a more loving place when they decide these two are destined to be together and their mission is to make them fall in love - which goes as smoothly as you would expect...
While quite mad in places, and with one of the silliest stories, the film is a good, lighthearted bit of fun. Not what you would expect as the follow-up to Boyles 'Shallow Grave' and 'Trainspotting', that's for sure! The script isn't the best, but is quite witty in places. Fantastic soundtrack (you gotta love Ewan doing Oasis! But, yes, I mean the proper soundtrack) and a lovely claymation ending.

There are better movies out there

A Customer from Buckinghamshire, England, 15th December, 2008

After 15 minutes of this movie i wanted to switch it off but i thought maybe it would get better but i was wrong. There was no chemistry between the two main actors who were supposed to fall in love with each other, not a great love story. Don't really understand how anyone could say this was a romantic film as it seriously lacked the romance and the kidnapping did not make any sense as she could have left at any time.

Non sense

simonfunhouse from Glasgow/ Scotland, 4th April, 2005

Hello Again,

I just read a rubbish review from one of your viewers, about A Life Less Ordinary.
I know everyone is entitles to there own opinions so what is nonsense for one person may no be for another. I urge you not to be put off by 1 negative comment. I have seen worse films !
My advice
If you enjoy watching Ewan Mgregor (Trainspotting, Shallow Grave) and Cameron Diaz (Charles angles, The Mask and Very Bad Things)
then you will enjoy watching these actors act their socks off, I thought they worked well together. They story line may be reference to a "Trashy Novel" but this film is a fun piece of escapism and definitely, one to watch.

2/10: disappointing

I read later this is described as a 'screwball comedy' - which translates to me as 'You'll like this if you're a wacky fun type of person who enjoys wacky fun types of people doing wacky fun types of things' (You get my drift). I'm not and I didn't.

Brilliant

If you like quirky comedies then this must be up your street. Although slightly slow to start the movie really starts when Ewan McGregor's character kidnaps the spoilt and rich character of Cameron Diaz. What I liked about this movie is the great soundtrack and the additional theme of the angels that are tasked with ensuring humans fall in love. The two threads interweave with splendid results. All in all the film reminds me off the earlier Baz Luhrmann films

If you're a dreamer

Chili4paws from , 27th February, 2009

Following Trainspotting Boyle co wrote and directed A Life Less Ordinary. It was supposedly meant to have a likeability factor for America but didn't quite work. The reasons it didn't work are precisely the reasons why I really like it. It's a dark comedy stroke love story centered around a kidnapping with the two key players being McGregor and Diaz. At worst I can describe it as quirky, but at best as a great show of how film as a medium can surpass reality and take us into dreamy and at times ludicrous places. I hadn't seen this film in years since rented in at Love and I Loved it just as much as the first time. It's definitely worth a watch, especially since Boyle has risen to fame with Slumdog.
