The very best of modern British comedy

mrjonty from , 20th May, 2009

'The Thick of It' is undoubtedly up there with some of the best British comedies of the last decade, earning it's rightful place alongside quality shows such as 'The Office', 'I'm Alan Partridge' and 'Peep Show'. In fact, one of the writer's on the latter of those shows, Jesse Armstrong, is one of the main writers alongside Armando Ianucci, the man who brought us other greats such as 'The Day Today' and 'I'm Alan Partridge'. So with that writing team in place, these specials were never going to be short of absolute genius, and the tale picks up where series 1 of the show left off; the Department of Social Affairs are in turmoil (for a change) after minister Ben Swain goes on Newsnight and has a meltdown during a quizzing by Paxman. Cue numerous furious insults by chief spin doctor Malcolm Tucker and his similarly minded sidekick Jamie. Both episodes are absolutely brilliant, particularly the scenes involving the minister for social affairs for the opposition, who's cynicism and experience make for hillariously entertaining viewing. If you liked series 1 of this, and you saw movie spin-off 'In The Loop' in the cinema, you'll love this DVD, well worth renting.

The best of British, a foul, truthful and downright horrible political satire.

Classic, classic comedy. Actors at the highest level bringing life to some of the most cleverly written satire. I love this stuff

Excellent backroom Westminster politics ongoings exposed in this docudrama. Really funny and well written but you can really believe spin doctors and politicians are really this bad.

Its a Documentary!

Texasdave from , 11th September, 2009

These films are so hilarious and I think tells what life under Alistair Campbell and the Blair regime was like but they are not for the weak as the language is fruity to say the least. Now we know why the Scots never trust a Campbell-remember Glencoe!

Thick of it Special

Dungbeetle from , 7th September, 2009

A sad but probably true portrayal of the awful people who inhabit the corridors of power. Funny satire in places. A clever contemporary take on modern society and its mores. Not one of these self seeking characters had any dignity or humanity but maybe that is why we are in the cultural mess we see today.
