With just seven days to go before he forfeits his own life Raphael is determined to make the most of his time. Rediscovering his love for his children and wife he realises that he is worth more to them alive than dead...but is it too late to give back the money and cancel his contract

Radio Times

Johnny Depp's eclectic career has seen collaborations with a host of deeply idiosyncratic directors, from Jim Jarmusch and Tim Burton to Roman Polanski and Emir Kusturica. His own directing debut, however, displays little of their flair. It's a muddled and pretentious affair about a native American (played by Depp) who agrees to star in a real-life snuff film in order to provide for his family. Marlon Brando, who appeared alongside Depp in Don Juan DeMarco, co-stars in a movie that premiered at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and quickly sunk without trace.

Meaningful and thought provoking. Fantastic performance from Depp.

Debbie from Scotland, 12th April, 2005

Very disturbibg due to it's brutal honesty about the way society forces some native american's to live. The movie focuses on one family's struggle to survive and in particular one man's sacrifice to provide them with a better life. Depp's character offers himself to star in a snuff film where he will be tortured to death. Don't watch this movie hoping to see torture and brutality - this movie is about the relationships and struggles that drive one man to make the ultimate sacrifaice. I was hoping and praying towards the end of this movie that Depp would somehow get out of his deal and find a better way forward...... This movie affected me for days afterwards. Still get a strange feeling thinking of it. Not to be missed, especially if you are a Depp fan.

THE BRAVE-DIRECTOR/ACTOR JOHHNY DEPP

Sparkie from BRISTOL, UK, 23rd June, 2005

I read the story line and thought it might be too gorey for me but we never got to Johhny Depp being tortured to death (thank goodness). I enjoyed this film. The film is about relationships and sacrifice. (It's not for the mainstream). It's a slow paced drama that explores the concepts of marriage and, more importantly, life and death.

Not a good one to go to bed on!!

Kate Jacobson from Hampshire, 14th February, 2004

Purely because this film stays with you for a while.

It's beautifully handled and Johnny Depp is superb and there is gentle humour to take the edge off the haunting situation. The film certainly makes its point regarding the way the Native Americans have been exploited and abused. Very sobering.

Definitely worth watching, it is pure class, but not exactly family entertainment. Not to appear glib, but probably best to line up a good comedy to follow.

I have to say I am very impressed, I usualy overlook films that are directed by actors (but for Johnny Depp I will always make an exception!) but this is surprisingly good! Maybe a bit too long but the cast was excellent (apart from the bloke who was obviously breathing after being killed) and the direction great. Hope Depp has plans to take a turn behind the camera again!

Don't rent this

A Customer from Scotland, 1st March, 2010

Seriously, this has to be one of the worst films ever. Don't get it just because u like Johnny Depp, it's not good, apart from one scene when he goes a bit mad...but not worth sitting through the rest

Not your usual snuff!

A Customer from Belvedere, 1st December, 2009

This movie is very much in the style of Depp's more profound and deep works. It shows heat and the slowness of time in a life led by poverty where the prospect of getting killed for money is not such an incredible idea to have. Don't expect big gory action as there is none as such, it is a beautiful movie though and if you have time to revel in music colours and atmospheres, you'll enjoy it; on the contrary, if your expecting something like 8mm starring Cage, you'll be thoroughly disappointed. Btw, you won't get to see the snuff movie or its creation, the movie is about the choice the character makes, not the death of him.

A no-go

Jowie78 from from Lancing, Brighton, 6th October, 2009

the most disappointing Johnny Depp film i've ever seen. i forced myself to watch the whole thing, telling myself 'it'll get better soon' but it never came - a waste of time if you ask me.

Oh no Johnny!

Pinkmat from , 3rd August, 2009

You'll like this if you just enjoy gazing at Johnny Depp's good looks. It's got little else to recommend it. This film can't make up its mind what it is. As social comment it could have worked with the living conditions of Depp and his family but it's all at one pace - slow and in the end you just don't care. Bringing Marlon Brando in does nothing to make it any better.
