Zonca's first film since The Dreamlife of Angels is a very different beast. Initially a character study of an alcoholic (Tilda Swinton as the titular Julia) it metamorphoses half an hour in, into a relentless kidnap thriller which veers from one desperate situation to the next at breakneck pace, without scarificing character detail. Swinton is absolutely extraordinary as Julia, making her totally convincing, even when her actions are hard to explain, there's a nervous energy about her performance too, which gives the whole film an edginess mirrored by Zonca's restless handheld camera. The film is, at 150 minutes, perhaps longer than it needs to be, and the third act does get repetitious, but Swinton carries it through to its sudden, but satisfying, ending.

I think this was the most unpleasant film that I have rented to date. I cannot understand what possessed Tilda Swinton (who is a brilliant actress) to accept this role. Her character was most unsympathetic and the story quite sordid. It was hard to follow the plot and the ending was most unsatisfactory. I watched this movie until the end but I don't know why. yuck.

confusing, erratic film, difficult to engage with characters ,altho Tilda Swinton was very believable as the main character - no exploration of why she was the way she was.

Inspired acting

- And an impressive inhabiting of character. On the plot, some strands of my credulity snapped early, and I watched, half gripped, the other half of me thinking what tosh. I've had much the same reaction to real life.

tilda Swinton is great ... Good watch

A Customer from London, 5th March, 2010

This is a good watch - Tilda Swinton is great - erratic, mad, crazy and growing all the time as a character - you see her development, but there is always that cringing feeling that she is digging herself deeper and deeper into a bad place - Worth seeing - good acting! - Makes you think!
