From the writer of the excellent 'Bow Street runner' mini-series CITY OF VICE, and director of the powerful drama THE RELIEF OF BELSEN, comes the untold story of the Norman conquest. 1066 chronicles a defining chapter in British history, exploring the conflict through the eyes of the those up close to the action, on the battlefield and caught up in the fray. The lavish two-part feature-length drama stars Mike Bailey (SKINS) Francis Magee (LAYER CAKE), and Soren Byder (FOYLE'S WAR).

If you thought that historical dramas were dry and boring, think again! This exceptionally well written, filmed and performed film, presented through the eyes of saxons, gives an astonishingly authentic feel to what it must have been to live through the terrible year of 1066. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the succession (we'll never really know but certainly the Norman accounts were biased) Harold was a remarkable man as were the men that he fought and died with. There are some minor historical liberties taken, but overall I would say that this should be shown in every school in the country. Utterly compelling throughout!

Mel Gibson should have done it.

As an educational piece for schools this might be considered quite good. I would certainly have been more entertained by this than trawling through the text books and listening to a monotone teacher. On it's own I thought it was a little weak and needed a bigger budget for it to appeal to a wider audience.

Patronising drivel

A Customer from Europe, 7th July, 2009

'A customer from London' has it exactly right, making this film poor. To make matters worse, the director's wibblings are patronising in the extreme. Don't waste your time feeding this DVD into your player. If you want an insight into 1066, Get Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' and view the episode 'Conquest'.

I made a bad choice. The film was too gory for me to enjoy but it does show the violence of war. My mistake

I was expecting something really interesting and gripping, but switched it off half way through. Great if you like this sort of thing but not for me.
