An intelligent and entertaining film that hits the mark.

A Customer from Newcastle upon Tyne, 5th August, 2009

I saw this at the cinema in April and came away buzzing. It's an action packed film which keeps you on the edge of your seat from the start right up up to the engaging climax. Martin McGartland is a controversial character who operated in a murky underworld. The director, Skogland, has had the bravery to present a balanced account of the times; nobody comes out of this film as a clean cut hero and that's how it should be. The British Intelligence community comes out of this film as badly as the Republican terrorist movement. McGartland comes across as an antihero initially acting for moral reasons in an immoral world. Both my Unionist and Republican friends have argued that their respective groups come out of this film badly. However given the methods used by both groups I think this is accurate and is far better than the simplistic Hollywood approach of one side being totally right and the other side being totally wrong. My only issue was with why the shooting of Martin McGartland is shown as happening in Canada (this is dealt with in the first seconds of the film, so is not a spoiler) when it is widely known that it happened in Whitley Bay near Newcastle after the local police gave away his identity. I think this adds to an already intriguing story.

5o dead men walking

A Customer from Ferryhill, 31st August, 2009

im dying to see this film as i once met the man in person. it was about 10 years ago and he was staying in the north east and he was stopped by the police who took him to court for a driving offence as he had changed his identity and they thought he was driving fraudently and they exposed his new identity. hence he didnt stay in the north east too long, but he was a pleasant man never the less.

A great, great film

RaskalW4 from from London, 17th September, 2009

Really enjoyed this, and it did more for me than years and years of news reports in terms of explaining the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland, of which i don't really know enough about to have any sort of political opinion. Gritty, well scripted, and the acting superb, especially from Ben Kingsly - how the man can go from the Rabbi in Lucky No Slevin to the dour northerner Fergus in this film, and be equally believable in each, is just genius. I didn't even realise it was him at first, such is chameleonicness (?). Watch it. I'm going to track down the book, and find out more.

Gritty and gripping, well written and acted. Bit of a blokes film, more your channel 4 than the big screen, well worth a watch.
