In the 21st century, genetic engineering makes possible the creation of biologically superior human specimens ("valids"), who then grow to positions of power and prestige. Would-be astronaut Vincent(Ethan Hawke) born the old-fashioned way, can only hope for a janitorial position at the elite Gattaca Corporation--until he buys the blood, urine, and identity of a perfect but paralyzed athlete. But a murder in the company's ranks attracts the attention of a detective who threatens to sniff Vincent out. A slick futuristic thriller. Academy Award Nominations--Best Art Direction.

Before screenplay writer Andrew Niccol stood the science-fiction genre on its head with The Truman Show, he had already shaken it up with this engrossing futuristic thriller (which he also directed), built around the controversial subject of genetic engineering and how it might lead to a socio-economic class divide. Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke) is the imperfect human with ambitions of joining a space mission, who illegally exchanges identities with Jerome (Jude Law), a paraplegic with perfect DNA. How he does this armed with blood and urine samples is ingeniously shown by Niccol, who mints a new genre vocabulary with his absorbing, intelligent and suspenseful story. In Niccol's future society a dustbuster is deadlier than a gun and wearing contact lenses means the choice between life or death. This thought-provoking cautionary tale is stunningly designed and has accomplished performances from Hawke, Law and Uma Thurman that do it full justice

Very convincing!

Great subject matter and there's a twist or two in this cautionary tale. Not overly into Sci-Fi but this one's cool. Good cast, acting and direction holds your attention. The three leads; Hawke, Thurman and Law are excellent.

Thought Provoking

Simon C from London, England, 18th December, 2003

This is quite a slow moving film but is definitely worth sticking with as it raises some very intelligent points about playing god and assuming that humans are nothing but the sum of their DNA.

The acting is decent all round and there are some very attractive visuals.

The extra material on the disk, particularly the 'Lost Scenes' are well worth a look too.

Gattaca- just a series of Amino acids?

cduk from West Yorkshire, 18th November, 2004

One of my favorite sci-fi movies. Basic underlying story that man is more than just the sum of his genetic quotient and that the human spirit to succeed can triumph over adversity.

On a darker note- Glimpses of a future society where discrimination based on “breeding”- although technically illegal is practiced everywhere, evolving a two tear society of the have’s and the have not’s. Hmmm- Doesn’t sound so far from to-days society when you think of it!

On a sadder /shallower note- It’s not what you are that matters to an employer, but what you appear to be!
This film will not appeal to everyone but for the seasoned sci-fi buff- essential viewing.

DNA

A Customer from Bristol, England, 8th January, 2005

This is a really great film! I liked the combination of styles and sensibility of it. There's so much that could have not worked in this, but the film is great and more than equal to the sum of it's parts. I think the appreciation of 'Gattaca' will grow with time, unlike most Hollywood fare. 'Gattaca' is intelligent, stylish and thrilling in equal measure. It poses serious questions about a near-future where there is a genetically-engineered overclass and a basic human underclass. The look of 'Gattaca' is just superb. Strong attention has been paid to lighting, shadow, colour, etc rendering a visual feast that is compelling. The cinematographer has a painterly eye. All the actors give strong performances and it is great to see Uma Thurman, Jude Law and Ethan Hawke at their best. I was also pleased to see Ernest Borgnyne as the janitor and the doctor played by the underrated Xander Berkley of '24' and 'Safe'.

Underwhelming

A Customer from Hillingdon, England, 24th November, 2009

Quite a believable scenario dealing with genetic engineering and prejudice against genetically 'inferior' natural humans. Not a lot happens, but Uma Thurman looks decorative. More of a detective story than a sci-fi really.

This film was pretty good with a very interesting concept of what life would be like if we could choose the best qualities for our children, a different kind of discrimination is born to discrimiate by genetics
