An enjoyable 90 minutes

SkyblueElephant from , 15th June, 2009

Sounding like a Spanish maths version of Cube, the concept for Fermats Room intrigued me. Having seen the film it didn't disappoint with a good plot and a well built up feeling of suspense. The four main characters work well and the script is generally good despite a couple of shaky moments. If you like something a bit different and don't mind the subtitles (which you soon forget are there) this is definitely worth a watch.

Maths thriller doesn't quite add up...

Jon Duckworth from Nottingham, England, 27th September, 2009

'Fermat's Room' is an intriguing Spanish cross between 'Saw', 'Cube' and the Nintendo DS game 'Professor Layton and the Curious Village'. Four strangers end up in a sealed room, tasked with solving infuriating maths problems while the walls start moving in on them. Sadly, 'Fermat's Room' never quite equals the sum of its parts. Though well-acted, stylishly directed and blessed with a witty, suspenseful script, the mystery, when revealed, is both unsurprising and unbelievable. Too many plot holes are left unplugged and, as a result, some of the tension goes down the drain in the last third. That isn't to say 'Fermat's Room' isn't without twists and surprises, however, and it certainly holds the attention for all of its pleasingly succinct running time. Not the classic its ingenious premise suggests, but still an intelligent and entertaining thriller, made with a considerable amount of flair.

A good movie, however, I had worked out the culprit from the start. Very similar to the Saw series, but without the gore.

Couldn't read the subtitles

ellectrastar from , 28th September, 2009

Sadly I can’t really rate this film as I wasn’t able to watch it so my two star “disappointing” mark is aimed at whoever thought it was a good idea to put the smallest ever white subtitles directly onto the picture which made them unreadable. I don’t think I even got to five minutes! Because the background was a light colour sometimes you couldn’t see the words, or where the picture was moving you couldn’t concentrate on them and they were way too tiny. Was a bit put out as liked the sound of this film. I enjoy foreign films and have watched a fair few but am sure they all had the subtitles on a black background and of a decent size! Unless you understand Spanish I can’t really recommend this!

Wonderfull little debut...

SlightlyCrazy from , 16th February, 2010

Left field movie from first time writer directors Luis Piedrahita and Rodrigo Sopeña, interesting story and well told - went down well in our household - though the english subtitles are difficult to read in places due to their size and placing and the background. Something a little different and not full of gore and gratuitous violence - well worth a punt... but why do they never look up??

Probably a good film - I'll never know

The subtitles are unreadable. They're tiny and white set against mainly light backgrounds.
